Overview

Zeb Marlowe, the physically scarred and invisibly wounded survivor of a top secret CIA brainwashing experiment, has begun to remake his life when Jai Jai Leland, the beautiful widow of a man who didn't survive, asks him to help her solve the mystery of her husband's violent death.

Marlowe, struggling to resist his attraction to Jai Jai, is pulled into her quest despite his memories of trauma and abuse. Together they search for psychiatrist Victor Ressid, creator of the experiments that turn student volunteers into slaves.

Meanwhile, obsessed by his own strange sexual appetites and sudden, unexpected access to unimaginable wealth, Ressid is consumed by fantasies of revenge against Marlowe, the only volunteer to defy him.

Against an ominous background of global terrorism, Marlowe and Jai Jai uncover a deadly conspiracy at the heart of government. They must risk their lives to stop a nuclear threat that will destroy the security of the entire world even as they wonder if Marlowe, too, has been turned into a slave.

With a plot that hurtles forward at electric speed, BRAINWASHED is set during the paranoid 1970's of Vietnam and Watergate. The novel takes place on the beautiful islands of the Caribbean, in Mexico and Ireland, Washington, DC and in a buried underground torture chamber located on Victor Ressid's secluded private estate near the Belize border.

BRAINWASHED is based on real-life psychiatric experiments conducted by the CIA in American universities and known by the code name MK-ULTRA.

Set in the 70’s, there is a definite undertone of camp that is completely appropriate for the era running through the novel. In the opening scenes in which Zeb and Jai Jai meet again there is a near sexploitation dance. Jai Jai is a woman using her wiles in a man’s world. There is a definite slant toward the female character in “Brainwashed.” Senator Chessie Tillmon is also a sassy and smart female who is determined and driven.

Chessie, Jai Jai and Zeb are certainly not the only characters. There’s a large cast of characters that can be at times awkward to keep straight. As a reader I focused on the plot lines as they came together and soon found that getting lost was simply no longer an option. While “Brainwashed” started slow, once the story got going it was one that simply was big moment to big moment and truly hard to put down. “Brainwashed” is a thriller in the strictest sense of the word.

It was fun to read a novel written by a married team. Michael and Ruth Harris have delivered a well-written and well-edited thriller masterpiece. It is not without its flaws but a savvy reader will find those flaws inconsequential and enjoy the wonderful and expertly constructed roller coaster ride that is “Brainwashed.”

Brainwashed and ***** part 6 *CADEN*

Caden shivered and stared at the door, afraid that elisa would come back. He had been wrong to even speak to her with questions. She had grabed his lower jaw tightly before stroaking his hair like an actual pet. He didnt even want to look at her, so he tried imagining cole insted. It didnt work though. Elisa was keeping his older brother somewhere. Mabey har<_>ming him. He swollowed and shivered again. Elisa had taken his shirt off while he was pasted out, and his cell phone taken as well so he always felt cold, even under the sheets. And he couldnt call for help. So Ever since she left he had tugged on the chains, trying to break it and untie it.
nothing. Zero plan. blank mind. 0!
caden gave up and layed on his side, then cried. Even though he took a vow to to shed tears again on his 10th birthday, he couldnt help himself. He had been kid<_>naped, slap<_>ped and chained. That seemed to do it. He put his hand where elisa struck him, and rubbed it. It was still burning, and possibly red. He removed his hand and wiped away his tears. In the corner he noticed a book with writeing on the cover was sitting there. He tried to reach for it, but it was to far. He laid on the bed again and buried his face in the pillow, fresh tears flowing from his eyes.
he had to find cole.
to be continued.....
