Overview

Thomas, son of a village blacksmith in 18th century England, relates how he fell in love with Lucy, an outstanding beauty and daughter of a wealthy family with societal ambitions. Their distaste for Thomas’s humble background and their callous marriage plans for Lucy frustrate the young lovers’ passions as they come of age and resist the parental business objectives of marriage. Dark clouds form when Thomas and Lucy’s struggle for freedom reaches a climax. The Hampshire setting may remind readers of Jane Austin’s works.

Meet the Author

Michael Sedgwick was born in Portsmouth, England, just before the outbreak of World War Two. He graduated from King’s College, London University, in 1961 with a B.S. degree in chemistry and physics. His focus on a technical career with a multinational manufacturing company in Wales, Brussels and Minnesota, distracted him from an early love of English literature and writing. In 1999, he retired to Arizona, and experienced a resurgence of his early interest in writing but lacked the focus needed to become a serious writer until joining Arizona Authors Association and Society of Southwestern Authors in 2007. Michael lives in Tucson with his wife, Eileen. A 2005 visit to the medieval Hampshire church of Saints Simon & Jude in the tiny village of Bramdean, sparked a desire to write his first novel.
