Overview

When Lee Weston's father writes him that an old enemy, Harvey Dodge, is back in town, Lee rides out in a hurry from Wyoming to Pecos, New Mexico only to find his father murdered and the family ranch burned to the ground. Certain that Dodge is to blame, Lee sets off to settle the score but gets into a fiery Colt showdown in the town of Pecos. Severely wounded, he flees into the mountains just before passing out.As fate would have it, Dodge's beautiful, yet headstrong, daughter, Ellen, finds Lee's unconscious body and secretly nurses him back to health. But when Lee insists on continuing his plan for revenge, he gets himself into a heap more trouble-false accusations, a near lynching at the hands of an angry mob and the scorn of the only girl he ever looked at more than once!

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up—L. Ron Hubbard's pulp fiction Western from the 1930s is a story about young Lee Weston who comes back home to Wyoming to find his family murdered. Convinced that his father's old enemy, Harvey Dodge, is to blame, Weston sets out to seek his revenge. Almost immediately Weston gets into a gunfight, murders another man, and is wounded. He is nursed back to health by a young woman and falls in love with her, only to discover that she is the daughter of his enemy. While this title will probably not be of interest to the majority of teens, there's plenty of action, blazing guns, and some romance here to capture the attention of reluctant readers who like Westerns. The multicast narration is well done, and superior sound effects and musical interludes add to the suspense. The cover art is exquisitely designed.—Ivy Miller, Wyoming Seminary Upper School, Kingston, PA

Meet the Author

With 19 New York Times bestsellers and more than 230 million copies of his works in circulation, L. Ron Hubbard is among the most acclaimed and widely read authors of our time. As a leading light of American Pulp Fiction through the 1930s and ’40s, he is further among the most influential authors of the modern age. Indeed, from Ray Bradbury to Stephen King, there is scarcely a master of imaginative tales who has not paid tribute to L. Ron Hubbard.

Read an Excerpt

Gradually the proximity of death drove all other thoughts from Lee’s head. He rode in a red nightmare of pain, fast because he could see the cloud which marked the pursuit behind him. Somehow he had to get into the mountains.

Many times, as a boy, he had ridden over this terrain. And it was only because he knew it so well that he was able to reach the canyon mouth which led upward into a tangled labyrinth of ravines and peaks. Somewhere ahead, he knew, there was a stream and on its banks there was an old trapper’s cabin, so well hidden that few punchers, interested mainly in the flat range, had ever come upon it. That place, where he had once spent happy weeks fishing for trout, was his only chance of life—providing he could remain conscious long enough to reach it.

It's like really being back in the west!!!!

This was a honest to goodness western adventure. Hubbard can really write and make you feel like you are there in the story experiencing the scenes as if you were there. I didn't know I loved westerns, now I do!!! Great story, total entertainment!

    Not just for Western lovers

I love great adventures and this book definately was just that. I have never read a western, though I have seen some movies, and so I can't compare it to other western novels. But I can say that it is a wonderful, fast paced, exiting adventure novel that compares very favorably with other adventure stories. Another page turner by L. Ron Hubbard from the pulp era. If other westerns are even half this good, I may have to take up the genre.

The "Branded Outlaw" is a tale about a son avenging hi

The "Branded Outlaw" is a tale about a son avenging his father's death. After burying his father, Lee Weston leans on his shovel and reflects on his three dead horses and the three weeks of hell that he endured trying to get back to Pecos Valley and his father's ranch. He was too late, his father now dead and the ranch burned to the ground, certain that Harvey Dodge is to blame, Weston sets out to even the score. After a surprise fierce showdown in the town of Pecos, Lee, badly wounded, flees into the mountains to hopefully heal his gun shot wounds. Now the story devolves into a farfetched scenario: Dodge's daughter, Ellen happens upon Lee unconscious in an abandoned cabin and kindly nurses him back to health. Romance blossoms and then trouble brews when Lee insists on continuing his plan for revenge. This is not one of Hubbard's better stories... it fails to deliver: the plot is too predictable and the characters are under developed and one dimensional.

    Awesome Book

Great western I loved the plot. One of the best of Hubbard's books. Once again he does a great job of creating adventure that you can get lost in. I will read this one again and again.

    The way I like westerns

I just posted a review on The Baron of Coyote River, another great western story. What I really liked about this story was that here you had a regular guy who was forced into a situation where he had to hitch up his pants and square off against some bad fellers. He had his own doubts and wasn't sure if he was doing the right thing or not. I like putting myself in those shoes and hope that I would also rise to the occasion and overcome the obstacles like Lee Weston.

Where Louis L'Amour learned his chops

I have read all of Louis L'Amour's paperback western novels at least once (except the three Hopalong Cassidy books he started out with) so it was interesting to go back to the pulp fiction era where L'Amour learned his chops. The general plot (good guy wrongly accused, land taken, not sure who the real bad guy is) will be familiar to any L'Amour fan. The only thing missing in "Branded Outlaw" is a fist fight or two. The audio book, like the others in this series, is well-acted and reasonably priced, 2 CDs for under $10.

Hot-headed cowboy in too much trouble!!!

Lee Weston, the hero, is quick to act with his fists or guns when he thinks he is right. Branded as an outlaw, after a gun battle, this story doesn't let up on the action. A good old western drama in the great opera of the wild west where "Judge Colt and his jury of six" settled many disputes on the spot. This story is rich with accurate color and descriptions of the authentic culture of the time. It is a great adventure, a compelling read and an education rolled into a high quality pulp classic.
