Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Sarah Flowers
Each title from the Scene series, published monthly, is essentially a fan magazine-each focusing on an individual performer popular with young people. Full-color photos are on every page, including several full-page pictures, and one double-page center spread. Each contains a "low-down" page in the best fan mag tradition: here's where readers learn about their hero's favorite movie, favorite pizza topping, and worst date. The main text is a summary of the star's life and career. A fold-out page in the back contains "The Scene Connection," a kind of flowchart connecting all of today's hot stars with one another via their movies, TV shows, and so forth-a sort of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon for the younger set. I showed these four volumes to a number of people, including librarians and kids. Kid reaction, both male and female, was enthusiastic, especially among the fourth through ninth graders. Several younger ones camped out at the reference desk while they were on display there, devouring every page. One older teen turned up his nose when I showed them to him, but then said, "Oh, wait...Jennifer Love Hewitt...let me see that one." The librarians unanimously agreed that these titles would be wonderful as incentive awards or Summer Reading Club prizes, but not one would be willing to put them in the collection. As one said, "It's the kind of thing you buy for your teenage daughter, so she can cut out the pictures and put them in her room." Indeed, if these books lasted a week in a circulating collection without being stolen or destroyed, I would be amazed. Illus. Photos. Charts. Note: This review was written and published to address four titles-Brandy, Jennifer Love Hewitt, James Van Der Beek and Matt Damon. VOYA Codes: 3Q 5P M J (Readable without serious defects, Every YA (who reads) was dying to read it yesterday, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8 and Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9).

Sittin' on Top of the World

She was just a seven-year-old sittin'up in her room, watching Whitney Houston on MTV, when she realized her calling. Eight years later she was already sittin' in a comfy chair...at the Grammy awards, hoping to score some hardware for her quad-platinum debut album. And she was just sittin' next to Whitney Houston in a jeweled carriage when sixty million TV viewers watched her as the first black Cinderella. Even now, Brandy will admit that with a second megabit album, her own hugely popular sitcom, and a starring role in a Hollywood movie, she's just "Sittin' on Top of the World."

But don't let all the sitting fool you. She's also pretty good at standing. Just ask Little Richard, who witnessed Brandy's first public performance.

In 1985 Little Richard and Bo Diddley gave a huge concert at the Los Angeles Forum. Brandy's mother, Sonja Norwood, is Diddley's cousin, so Sonja decided to take her six-year-old daughter to the show. When Little Richard finished his set, he invited the audience to come up and sing a tune with him. Gangly, doe-eyed Brandy rushed the stage and stood front and center, basking in the spotlight. She sang along, belting out each lyric with emotion. When the song ended to a roaring crowd, she beamed and bowed. Afterward she admitted to her mom, "For a minute, I thought that was my audience."

Think maybe she has performing in her blood?

Apparently. When Brandy was born on February 11, 1979, in McComb, Mississippi, Sonja Norwood already knew what was up. "I told the doctor, 'I have just given birth to a star.' I knew she was going to be somebody one day."

And Brandy must have agreed because she hit the ground singing.

Her mom remembers, "When she was a baby, my mom would hold her for hours and sing to her. Brandy grew up singing. She could sing before she could talk."

Soon singing wasn't enough. Brandy needed an audience. At age two she sang her first solo in church in Brookhaven, Mississippi. With that experience behind her, Brandy took the show on the road...to her bedroom, where she performed, with microphone, for a patient audience of dolls.

By age four Brandy's talent and stage thirst were undeniable. The family packed up and moved to Carson, California, near Los Angeles. She immediately began the flurry of auditions, tryouts, and talent shows that young star wanna-bes must endure. At twelve she sang backup vocals for the R&B group Immature. Finally Brandy met a producer who began shopping her to various record labels.

Why did Ron Shapiro, the executive vice president of Atlantic Records, decide to risk his neck and sign a fourteen-year-old unknown? Well, her angelic voicedidn't hurt, but the deciding factor was her spunk. At an industry showcase, where entertainment bigwigs got together for a private little concert, Brandydemanded respect. Ron remembers: "It was a big, jaded crowd, and when she started singing, they started talking. And she just stopped singing. She said, 'You're being rude.' And I panicked. And the crowd silenced. But then shestarted singing, and they listened. And she won them over."

And just like that, Brandy was on her way to becoming somebody.
