Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
Bitsy the little bunny falls out of her girl's pocket as the girl walks through the woods. Bitsy is alone and afraid, especially when she hears a loud roar. At first, Bitsy hides behind her ears. But she realizes that the bear is gentle and willing to be her friend. Bear is on his way to his cave to hibernate for winter, but first he sees Bitsy safely home. Bitsy is happy to be home and in her warm home and bed. But she worries about Bear, especially when it starts to snow. She decides she must find him and make sure he found his way home safely. She goes off into the woods and finds Bear sound asleep in the snow. Bitsy knows she must help him, but how? She cannot wake him up. She cannot move him herself. How can she save the friend who saved her? Beeke's beautiful illustrations bring the story of friendship and sacrifice to life. Children will appreciate the tender story of how valuable each friend's contribution is.

PreS-Gr 3-One autumn afternoon, Bitsy, a tiny lilac toy bunny, falls out of her girl's pocket and gets lost in the woods. Although frightened, she is determined to find her way home. When she meets a huge brown bear, she hides behind her ears, but he is gentle and offers to help her, even though he's on his way to his cave for his winter nap. During the walk, Bear becomes increasingly sleepy, so Bitsy sings bouncy tunes to keep him awake until they arrive at her house. That night, she sees the falling snow and wonders if Bear reached his destination. In the morning, she goes in search of him, unwinding a ball of yarn to mark her path. She uses all of the yarn and then unravels her own sweater before she finally finds him. Bear has fallen asleep in the open and no matter how loudly she sings, she just can't wake him. However, the woodland animals hear her, and together they build a shelter around Bear to protect him through the winter. Endearing, richly hued watercolor illustrations bring this touching story of friendship and bravery to life. The plot is fresh and original, the smoothly flowing narrative has sparks of suspense, and Bitsy is an irresistible heroine. A great book to curl up with on a snowy day.-Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A charming tale of an unlikely friendship, this British import has an old-fashioned feel. Bitsy, a stuffed rabbit, gets lost in the woods one fall day. Rescued by a sleepy bear, Bitsy worries that her new friend won't make it to his den before falling asleep. She ventures out the next morning, and with help from the other woodland animals, builds him a shelter. Beeke's lovely watercolor and mixed-media illustrations present a pastoral world in which it seems entirely natural that a tiny purple toy rabbit and a smiling brown bear meet and converse. Softly rounded vignettes are interspersed with single page illustrations of sunny autumn scenes. Cold blues and icy whites dominate the winter scenes until bear is snugly sheltered. On the final double-page spread, the two friends are reunited, and sunny hues appear again. Bitsy's habit of breaking into song adds an engagingly childlike dimension to her personality, as does her unsuccessful effort to hide behind her ears when frightened. Young listeners will be as pleased as bear to make Bitsy's acquaintance. (Picture book. 3-6)
