Overview

Spring 1944: Emily Bennett, a young English girl, has come to stay with Molly McIntire's family to escape the bombing of London. Emily's parents sent her off with the reminder to be "a brave soldier for England," but Emily doesn't see how she can do that. Molly tries hard to make sweet, shy Emily feel at home, and Emily is grateful for Molly's friendship. Emily is delighted that she can help Molly with math and is pleased and proud when she impresses Molly. But it is not until Emily makes a big mistake and has to ask Molly for help that Emily shows how truly brave she is--and both girls learn what friendship really means.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathryn Erskine
Part of the "American Girl" series, this book centers on Emily, the British refugee who comes to live in America with Molly, who herself is the subject of many books in the World War II era collection of this series. The story is set in 1944 and relates Molly's experience from her perspective. For safety reasons, she has been sent to stay with Emily's family in America. She must deal with homesickness and performing the Flutophone without having practiced very much, two age-appropriate ordeals for the fourth grade set, made even more traumatic for Emily because of her extreme shyness. In addition there are cultural differences for her to learn about and overcome. Emily and Molly become friends, helping each other out, and Emily earns the title, brave. As always in this series, there is an informational explanation at the end that tells of the very real events upon which the story is based.
School Library Journal
Gr 2–4
Emily is a third grader from London who has been sent to stay with her American friend, Molly, during World War II. Molly helps Emily overcome her shyness and find a way to aid people back home. This is a companion to the "Molly" books (American Girl), and, with its well-paced plot and likable characters, it's an interesting addition to that series. A concluding chapter includes photographs and anecdotes about English children during the period and expands on Emily's story. Lovers of the "American Girl" series can add an English lass to their list.

I had a whole shipment of American Girl book sent to me, and the box was so crushed that the books were too! Barnes and Noble uses DHL for part way of there delivery in conjunction with the USPS. DHL does not handle their packages as carefully as UPS does. They are a poor carrier and I think Barnes should use a better delivery service for their customers.
