This is not the worst book I ever finished (that is the high point). I was expecting a historical account of the late 1700's. Instead we have a heroine (?) who is a cross between Calamity Jane and Lizzie Borden and maybe Nancy of Sid & Nancy. She axe murders her stepfather (who probably richly deserved it), falls in love with a lunatic preacher who is a textbook control freak and abuser, gets hooked on laudenum while pregnant, deserts her mother who is nuttier than she is, and these are her strong points. If there was even one character in the book with a modicum of redeeming value I missed it. Both sides of the revolutionary conflict delight in rape, torture, burning, looting, pillaging and general debauchery. All characters are one dimensional, that being demented. The battle scenes range from accurate to - did we just change authors? In one scene the killing field is completely socked in by smoke you can taste, and a minute later dead-eye Jane is picking off the officers. I give this book a huge arrrrrrrrrrgh! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
