Overview

Brave New Knits by Julie Turjoman, cofounder of Ravelry.com is the first book to celebrate the convergence of traditional hand-knitting and modern technology. The Internet has made it possible for the knitting community to connect through photos, pattern-sharing, and blogs that document the knitting projects and passions of dozens of designers and enthusiasts. With a foreword written by Jessica Marshall Forbes, co-founder of Ravelry.com, Brave New Knits includes 26 must-have garment and accessory patterns, all gorgeously photographed by knitting celebrity Jared Flood of Brooklyn Tweed. Contributors range from established designers like Norah Gaughan, Wendy Bernard, Anne Hanson, and knitgrrl Shannon Okey, to rising stars such as Melissa Wehrle, Connie Chang Chinchio, and Hilary Smith Callis. In-depth interviews with the designers reveal their design philosophy and passions. From shapely sweaters and delicate shawls to fingerless gloves and stylish hats, each of the knitted designs features detailed directions and charts to inspire both the beginner and experienced knitter.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Turjoman invited 26 of her favorite knit bloggers to contribute patterns to this collection. The first section includes a variety of sweater patterns in various styles, and the second section focuses on knitted accessories. There are some big names here—Ysolda Teague, Connie Chang Chinchio, Anne Hanson, Stefanie Japel, and Clara Parkes, among others—and, surprisingly, none of the patterns are the throwaways prominent designers often contribute to books that aren't their own. Given the diversity and quality of the designers represented, there's something in this book for everyone. An excellent introduction to the world of knit blogging.

This was my first time downloading a knitting pattern book for my NOOK Color, and I was so excited! Then I went to look at the charts for the Orchid Leaf shawl and you can't even see them on the reader! What's the point of converting a book into a digital one if you can't even read the all of the charts, just some of them! Buyer beware if you want to actually knit from the all of the charts in this book, do NOT get for your NOOK. Unfortunately I learned the hard way and now I'm out money.

This is not your mothers knitting pattern book. If you are not currently a knitter, this book will not only give you the desire to learn this wonderful craft but it provides patterns that are written with you in mind. If you are a long time knitter, this book will make you want to grab the keys to go to the craft store for new yarn. This book takes the long time knitter or the new to the craft knitter to higher levels than has ever been available before. Now you can easily make beautiful projects that you will feel good about giving as gifts or wearing yourself. No more dull, old fashioned, knitting projects. The projects in this book are new, modern and updated fashions for the home or individual. The directions are so easy to follow. Each project is rated for the knitters ability level and is described in easy to read ratings at the beginning of each pattern and full size photos of the completed project. This book goes on to tell you what size needles you will need and the kind of yarn needed. The directions are easy to follow even for the beginning knitter. As a long time knitter, I was drawn to this book for its beautiful photos. It is packed with directions on knitting modern clothing, blankets and accessories. The photos are amazing! The author has taken knitting out of the ordinary & comfortable setting of the home and moved it to the Internet. She has taken the best in directions from online bloggers and added them in a book that will become a permanent book on my bookshelf and used many times. This book is not your normal "dull" patterns. It takes dull out of the world of knitting and replaces it with "bold" & "modern". Once you view the photos, you will want to pick up those long lost knitting needles and start knitting. If you are not currently a knitter, this book will give you the desire to learn this age old talent. You will find patterns for sweater, coats, scarves, socks, blanket, hat and even a baby top. I loved each and every pattern. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a meanful craft or a long time knitter. I give it a 5 star on all levels from the photos to the directions. I loved this book. It would make a great addition to anyones personal library or as a gift. This book will appeal to teens as well as adults.

Did the reviewer who could't read the charts increase the text size? I want to buy this, but not if I can't read the charts.
