Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Catherine Campbell Wright
Amelia Bedelia is as hilarious as ever in this musical extravaganza. Herman Parish's clever play on words have Amelia confusing a railroad conductor for a musical conductor, flat bees with B flats, and cymbals for pot lids! Children will have a great time trying to guess what trouble Amelia will cause next because of her misunderstandings, and adults will appreciate the subtle wordplay and smart dialogue.
Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman
This story will bring on giggles from the moment Amelia brings home a train conductor instead of the music conductor whom she was supposed to meet. When asked if she plays by ear, she rubs her ear across the strings of a violin. "Ouch!" Our favorite literal maid is certain that a wind instrument must be a "fan," while a string instrument must be a coil of rope. Musical mayhem never skips a beat in this fun-filled story. Even the conductor laughs at the conclusion when Amelia erupts on the stage with a "bang" by crashing into the bass drum.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3Herman Parish, the nephew of Peggy Parish, admirably carries the torch in the continuation of this well-loved series. When Mrs. Rogers asks her very literal maid to go to the train station to pick up the conductor for the school concert, Amelia Bedelia returns with the train conductor. And so begins another story of misunderstandings, this time set within the musical world of a school concert. When a bee is busily buzzing around Amelia Bedelia, she flattens it with a pair of cymbals, disrupting the orchestra and further provoking the already irate conductor. "Would you call that B-flat?" he asks. "Absolutely," says Amelia Bedelia. "A bee couldn't get any flatter." Sweat's clear cartoon illustrations work well with the text and reflect today's multicultural awareness with the inclusion of various ethnic groups. Amelia Bedelia devotees will not be disappointed by her latest wacky adventure.Amelia Kalin, Valley Cottage Library, NY
