Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nicole Peterson
Mia is the youngest child in her family and the only girl. This means that instead of playing hockey like her brothers, she dances on the ice. She is pretty good but not the best in her ice skating class. The problem is her parents do not have a lot of money and when the heater breaks, they only have enough money for either Mia's regional skating competition or her older brother's hockey tournament. The family must decide between the two. Throughout the book, Mia demonstrates her strength of character as she handles competition and disappointments. This is a realistic story about a good family with financial struggles. Healthy competition and hard work are emphasized in the book, along with the philosophy that winning is not everything as long as you do your best. Part of the "American Girl" series, this book is a wholesome story that middle readers will enjoy. The end of the book contains letters written to American Girl, along with responses to those letters. Each letter talks about a relevant issue (brothers, competition, unique interests, etc.) and gives advice to the girls. Reviewer: Nicole Peterson

One of the best books out there.

I highly recommend this book. Bravo, Mia! Is the wonderful sequel in the MIA american girl series. Mia is a young figure skater who travels to regionals in hopes to become a skater someday. Though poor, her effort shows and her family supports her. Mia gets 4th place and her best friend, Anya, does too. The story focuses on her families struggles to keep up with such an expensive sport and their love for eachother no matter what, along with how figure skating may be a sport where only one person is on the ice at a time, but really its a team sport because skaters support and love eachother so well, such as Chad the senior skater shows in this book.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

Wonderfully written! A great read at any age :-)

Both of these Mia books are written so well! I am a 42-year-old Mom who purchased the Mia books for my teenage daughter and I loved them just as much as my daughter enjoyed reading them. I highly recommend these books - the author explores family life, growing up, sports competition, having fun with ice skating in addition to the everyday drama of peer pressure. I wish American Girl would consider more books about Mia by this author....
