Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bobbie Lowe
Construction Careers is part of a series titled "In the Workplace." This series gives young adults an inside view of how their studies relate to the workforce world. Author Cath Senker provides an extensive overview of this wide-ranging industry. Each chapter has multiple subtitles which provide an opportunity to present more detail for each respective subfield. In each section, the author gives the reader checklists of what it takes to achieve a degree/job in that specific field of construction. Senker also gives ?Handy Hints' which are fun and interesting to read. They are insightful and creative and some I would never even think of. For example: Working as a CAD operator might suit you if you'd prefer to work in an office environment. You will spend most of your time in front of a computer and will need to concentrate hard to produce accurate computer models. Other small fun facts the author provides are ?Where Will I Be?' focusing on where that certain job will rank in the company business ladder. The text answers questions related to direct management where one is in charge of other employees, being a CEO, or whom you would have as a boss. There are also ?Main Tasks' which lists the main components of each job. The text is full of graphics and different layouts that make it more reader friendly and the information more accessible. There are interviews with professionals who are currently working in the construction field. In the back of the book there is a further reading section, websites, glossary, and index. A useful set for a school or classroom library. Reviewer: Bobbie Lowe
