Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The focus on Brazil, characterized as the "Giant of South America," spotlights the country's history and contemporary practice of inequality, both social and economic. Brazil's amazing mix of peoples and cultures, thanks to colonization, slavery, and immigration, is also highlighted. Students will enjoy this readable book, but the obvious questions, such as why immigration fueled the economy of the United States but seems to have run Brazil into national debt, are not asked. The format of this series invites students to use the book as a springboard for further research and/or report writing and presentation. The many resources offered in the back matter, including print materials, Web sites, and ways to contact government organizations, aid students to learn more about Brazil on their own or in small groups. 2004, Mason Crest Publishers,
