Bread, grains, pasta, and rice are included in the largest section on the National Food Pyramid. That means they are the most important. It is recommended that six to eleven servings of high fiber, energy packed, whole-grains be eaten every day to help the body get important nutriments, and maintain health. This book introduces breads and grains to preschoolers in a way that makes eating them more appealing by using everyday meals to show them in a variety of ways. From cereal or waffles for breakfast, a sandwich or a tortilla wrap for lunch, rice and pasta with dinner, and corn muffins for dessert, these colorful pictures provide a visual of other preschoolers enjoying yummy-looking foods containing whole grains. Parents can discuss the different tastes and textures of whole grain foods. Showing a family eating popcorn as a healthy snack is a great way to explain the importance of sharing. The short, simple sentences make it easy to help sound out new words. The photos keep the preschooler interested. The author did a great job of complementing each page with a full photo on one side, and easy to read, two-sentence text on the other. The book introduces nine different bread and grain meals.
