Excerpt:
Lucas plucked the gin out of the liquor cabinet. “Planted your letter in the viscount’s manor. Don’t believe I was followed. Drink?” He offered Fitzroy the bottle.

This temporarily distracted the man, who frowned at what Lucas had poured for himself. “That’s mine, you know. And yes.” When Lucas offered him a glass, Fitzroy snapped back: “Did you take anything?”

“What? No.”

Fitzroy did not show the relief Lucas had expected him to, but frowned deeper. “Really?” He beckoned Lucas up the stairs casually, taking the gin with him as he did so.

“Alright, yeah, but nothing they’d miss.” Lucas fished in his pockets for the statuettes. “Only a bit a’ gold.”

“Excellent.” Fitzroy let them both into his bedroom. “They’ll assume the intruder was doing nothing more devious or nuanced than thievery.”

Apparently this would become Lucas’s modus operandi, being mistaken for a common thief. He let Fitzroy settle on the bed with his gin, then came before him to tap the earl’s glass with his own. “Then congratulations, m’lord, on your scheme.”

Fitzroy drained his glass and reached for the bottle. “Well, it hasn’t worked yet. But likewise.” He reclined across the bed – the most at-ease that Lucas had ever seen him – but then looked up at Lucas thoughtfully with those piercing blue eyes of his. “My god, what am I going to do with you?”

“Pay me,” Lucas answered promptly. “Well.”

This got a laugh out of Fitzroy. “Yes, of course.” But he made no move at that moment to get up, instead patting the free expanse of the bedsheets. “Join me.”

Lucas did as he was told, stretching himself across the bed. They were close enough now that he could feel the heat of Fitzroy’s body emanating through his clothes. And though the low lamplight and the warmth of the gin made him rather peaceable, Lucas’s skin still buzzed with the possibilities. And really, what the hell, he’d done more reckless things in his life. Made a living off them, in fact. He cleared his throat to break the silence. “Though I would accept more than one form of payment.”

The bed shifted as the earl turned to look at him. “Oh?”

“Aye.” He set his gin on a bedside table in order to prop himself on his elbows. “I think I’d be content if you would only kiss me.”

A beat of silence, then Fitzroy made an indistinguishable noise in the back of his throat. “Black…I don’t do that anymore.”

“You don’t?” Lucas scooted closer, until their knees were touching in the near-dark. “It is quite easy, I swear it.”

The clink of a glass as Fitzroy set his gin down, and the Lucas felt the man’s strong hand at his hip. “Imp,” Fitzroy said with a smile in his voice. “I promise you I still know how.” He slid his hand up Lucas’s body, over his chest and up his throat, to catch his chin. He leaned in then, his spicy scent going straight to Lucas’s head, and kissed him.
