All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
The Count Basie Orchestra is heard on this album playing live at a disc-jockey convention in Miami. Their first of three sets took place at 2 a.m. but the late hour if anything kept the band loose. Most of the selections on this record were not recorded during that era, including fine charts on "In a Mellow Tone" and "Moten Swing."

    Atomic!!!

Of the many incarnations of the Basie Band this one is probably the most powerful. This live recording of the Count Basie Big Band in 1959 is one of the most delightful albums I have ever heard. Here they are, with Joe Williams, playing at an afterhours dance in Miami. You hear the chattering of the guests and the interplay of band members. You hear the Count stretching it out and the band hammering it out. I giggled in delight while listening to this priceless document of the swingingest dance band in history playing at, what else, a dance. Highly recommended.
