Overview

After years as a successful magazine editor, Lee Eisenberg decided he had to find a way to renew himself lest he slouch grumpily into middle age. His chosen discipline: golf - which he had played erratically over the years, but for which he still harbored a passion. His goal: to break eighty - to go from bad, to better, to pretty damn good. His method: to try anything and everything - teachers, schools, videos, books, physical therapy, custom clubs, prayer - that weekend golfers turn to in their endless search for the Holy Grail.

Breaking Eighty is Eisenberg's account of his "journey through the nine fairways of hell" - of the months he spent living out every golfer's dream of becoming as skilled as he, or she, can possibly be. This is the story of an obsession, the kind of obsession that anyone who's ever had a passionate commitment to self-improvement can appreciate and relate to. And it's the memorably moving story of finding one's place in the world - and, naturally, on the course. While hundreds of golf books have been written from the teacher's perspective, Breaking Eighty is the first time we can step right into the spikes of an all-too-willing pupil, and share with him the countless false steps, the money ill-spent, the endless wrong turns, and the gut wrenching glory of once and for all Getting It Right.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Eisenberg, former editor of Esquire and currently a consulting editor at Time, was a sporadic golfer who stayed away from the game for long stretches after adolescence. Then in 1995, he resolved to lower his usual score, in the low 100s, to break 80, all in an 18-month concentrated effort. His quest involved reading or rereading the famous authors on the subject from Bobby Jones onward and working with teachers around the country, starting with Brad Redding, his long-time coach. He found that techniques he read about may have been effective for their authors but were not necessarily helpful for everyone else. He also discovered that coaches often disagreed with one another, and many of the younger ones were caught up in trendy technology like the use of videos, while others offered New Age philosophy, Zen or even supplementary physical therapy. After he put everything together, Eisenberg hit consistently in the mid- to high 80s, but never reached his goal. The book may reassure those who see themselves condemned to a lifetime as hackers that they are not alone.
