    more from this reviewer

The second Fitz Clare historical urban fantasy is a super tale filled with plenty of intrigue and suspense

In 1933 Upyr Elder Edmund Fitz Clare is shocked with the affront when he regains consciousness. A rival group of shapeshifters apparently abducted him and chained him inside some dungeon. He can only guess that he remains in London and that their plan is to use him as an expendable bargaining chip.

Edmund is unaware how far his enemies plan to go as they want nothing less than world domination; to succeed Edmund and his faction must be removed. Mortal Estelle begins having visions of her missing lover in which she sees him in bondage. She is not sure what to do, but the kidnappers are aware of her and plan to take their fight to her and her family; only Edmund can save them, but he is incarcerated.

The second Fitz Clare historical urban fantasy (see KISSING MIDNIGHT) is a super tale filled with plenty of intrigue and suspense as the hero is trapped but more worried about his loved ones than himself. The story line is fast-paced from the moment Fitz begins to understand his predicament and never slows down as he knows he must find a way to escape. Fans will feel they have been transported to a unique Depression Era London courtesy of Emma Holly.

    Just too much for me

While I've enjoyed this series for its action and vivid characterization, this one hit my breaking point. The sex is so explicit as to rank as pornographic, and there is way too much of it. It's great for people who like to read pure erotica but not for those who just want a good story. This one just got too gross for me, so I sold all of her books to Half-Price Books and won't buy any more. The publisher needs to put an explicit sex label on these books to warn readers of the content. I don't have anything against it; it's just not to my taste as a reader. I started reading Holly's books for the paranormal aspects and really enjoyed that part; the writing is entertaining and the stories intriguing. I'm just not into the extreme erotica.

    A good read

I have to say, I really enjoyed this book in the series as well. I usually don't like period stuff, but this one was okay (and a little enlightening). If you enjoyed the rest of the series, you will defintiely like this one.

    I Also Recommend:

    Good British style Vampire Book

A bit of a departure to the writing style of Emma Holly. This book is not as steamy as her other books. However, that does not mean it is not sexy and hot. Just a bit more reserved. The characters draw you in the adveture and conflict of thier lives. The setting is at the turn of the 20th century and begins in England. Edmund is a vampire that has adopted several orphans to live with him. Ms. Holly draws you into the relationship each has with the other and with Edmund. The book is slow at times but always charges full steam ahead after those breaks.
