Overview

An eagerly awaited collection of stories dealing with domestic abuse, edited by the New York Times bestselling author Zane.

Breaking the Cycle is a stunning and moving anthology of stories, each of which focuses on an aspect of domestic abuse. This powerful collection is sure to serve as a wake-up call for people either dealing with a domestic abuse situation, or those watching someone else endure it.

In the title story, Zane describes the turmoil that a young girl suffers at the hands of her stepfather. The girl and her mother plan their escape, but at the last minute the mother falters. In D.V. Bernard's "The Lonely Echoes of My Youth," readers are introduced to a young boy raising himself on the fringes of a drug-infested neigborhood. Nane Quartay's provocative story, "The Grindstone," describes a boy who witnesses a brutal murder which will have far-reaching effects on him and his family. Tracy Price-Thompson weaves a powerful tale in "The Stranger" when a woman constantly abused by her husband finds inner strength after a brutal attack. Collen Dixon's "The Break of Dawn" will keep readers deep in thought long after they finish reading her story about a young desperate mother terrifed that her own daughter will grow up and become victimized herself. Dywane D. Birch's "Victory Begins With Me" reflects how one woman has to struggle to get her life back to normal. Shonda Cheekes' "Silent Suffering" flips the script when a man finds himself abused by the female in his life. Newcomer J.L. Woodson's "God Does Answer Prayers" deals with a young boy fighting for his life in a hospital bed, put there by one of the people who is supposed to love him the most: a parent.

These stories capture the dangerous realities of domestic abuse, while also pointing toward the steps that need to be taken to break the cycle that perpetuates it. It is sure to serve as a rallying cry for all those who desire victory over their own victimization, and a guide for understanding the complex undercurrents that make such patterns possible.

    Enlightening

This book told several different stories about the different kinds of abuse that happens within households. The abuse that women and men endure as adults and how it affects their children. Breaking the Cycle was indeed a book that people should read to break the cycle of violence and abuse.

    BIG FAN

I am a big fan of Zane and anything with her name on it will be purchased by me. Usually she is known for her sexy stories but this book has turned the tables. Various authors have written short stories on the abuse that many individuals suffer from in a relationship and it is a must read....an eye opener for some who may be encoutering such matters or going through the same.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    Extraordinary

The authors that were choosen to write short stories for this amazing novel, focused on a specific type of abuse and molded the story from that point. This book was totally different from what Zane normally publishes. Each story grabs at your heart strings, and you wish that you can change the circumstances in which the characters are exposed to. Any form of abuse is traumatizing and can effect ones emotional state of mind. Zane has accomplished to project that message through "Breaking The Cycle".

    GOOD BOOK

This was a good book. I have always been a reader of Zane's books. I really did not know what to expect, I'm really not a reader of short stories. They always seem like the story is unfinshed. I was proven wrong, Zane did a good job by choosing some good authors. keep up the good work.

    Riveting

Breaking The Cycle, edited by Zane, is a collection of eight stories that deal with the topic of domestic violence. The distinctive voice of each of the contributing authors provides a different twist to this troubling subject. Zane starts the anthology with a story of a teenage girl who is determined to break the cycle despite her mother's reluctance. I was fascinated by the writing style of J.L. Woodson who wrote, God Does Answer Prayers from the perspective of a young boy who is an accidental victim of domestic violence. The young protagonist tells the story while hovering between life and death in a hospital room. The Break of Dawn by Coleen Dixon had a surprise ending that left me stunned. Shonda Cheekes boldly reveals an aspect of domestic violence that many people are unaware of. The horror of abuse depicted in The Stranger by Tracy Price-Thompson just kept escalating. Each author is to be commended for not only exposing the many facets of domestic violence but for also offering a solution to break the cycle. The resources found at the end of the book is an invaluable tool for anyone seeking help. Kudos to Zane for taking the chance to step outside the erotica genre to shed some light on this serious issue.

This book was very good, I just finished reading it and I have to agree with the previous note the last story was not that great... But the book itself was excellent am sure it will help a lot of women and men that are in an abusive relationship....

    Good But!!!

I loved the first couple of stories they were great. But I just did not like the last story. I don't know if I missed something or what. It was long and drawn out and seemed to have no meaning.
