Overview

Nothing is easy about life above the Arctic Circle. Except, perhaps, falling in love. Bryson Faulkner embraces the challenges that come with making a home in one of the most beautiful but unforgiving places on earth: the isolation of the endless wilderness, the harsh and unpredictable climate, the predators that lurk about her remote cabin. And even the most perilous dangers of all—those that await her when she takes to the skies as one of Alaska’s most daring bush pilots. The only thing missing is a special woman to share it all with, but she’s resigned herself to the fact that few people can thrive in such an extreme environment. Everything Karla Edwards thought she knew gets called into question when a series of events turns her comfortable and well-ordered life on its ear. Her partner leaves her, her mother dies, and Karla learns she has a sister in Alaska she never knew. She takes a leave of absence from her job as an ER nurse in Atlanta and heads to the far north, seeking answers and adventure. She finds all that and more when she crosses paths with a sexy bush pilot who opens her eyes to new possibilities. But can she open her heart as well and learn to trust again?

A beautiful, well-mussled black she-wolf stepped into camp."May I join?" She asked confidently like a leader, her pale blue eyes sarkling in the sunlight. She shifts to another position, and you see tiny star-like flecks dotting her sleek coat. Her long legs built for speed are just as relaxed as she is.

    I loved it

This was a quick and enjoyable read. This book had interesting lead characters Bryson and Karla that initially clashed in the harsh Alaskan environment, but later developed a friendship through a multitude of life-altering events. I look forward to other books form this author.

A fine offering by a talented author.

This is Baldwin's 6th book. I read her very first, Hunter's Pursuit, when it first came out. I was somewhat ambivalent about it, and hadn't read anything of hers since. When I picked this one up, I paged through it, read a bit, and decided to buy it. I'm glad I did.

Kim Baldwin obviously loves Alaska, and it shows. Her rendering of the country, the landscapes, the people, are rich and ring true. Her understanding of why people live there, and why people don't, is clear. She uses strong descriptives, and strong dialogue, to tell her story. She does such a fine job, even the little red Super Cub that her main character flies feels real.

Bryson Faulkner is the daughter of a bush pilot. It stands to reason that she would become one, as well. And a damn good one at that. Bryson is a well-drawn, well-imagined character. She has depth and is intriguing. Simply put, she's hot (heck, even her name is hot). And while one may think it would be difficult to find women to hook up with in Alaska, Bryson seems to manage just fine. But she does get lonely on occasion, and longs for a woman who would love her, and life in Alaska.

Karla Edwards is not quite as well fleshed out. She's an ER nurse in Atlanta, who life is in a tailspin following the abrupt departure of her girlfriend, the sudden death of her mother, and the unexpected discovery of a sister she never knew she had. Said discovery leads Karla to Alaska, where she has no clue how she will be received, but does not know what else to do.

This story started off very strong and showed a lot of potential. Unfortunately (and I really do mean that), it kind of fell apart about 3/4 of the way through, when the two women actually come together. At that point, the dialogue and characterizations became rather silly, and my patience thinned. Even so, the book's strong points far outweigh its weaker points, and so I would still recommend it.
