I want to state explicitly that the editors have created an excellent book. The layout is perfect, the illustrations are generally of good quality, the tables are easy to read, and the text is highly instructive...the supply of information in this "breast encyclopedia" is useful for many, both students and specialists. I highly recommend The Breast.

This is a second edition, two-volume text that was originally published in 1991 as a single volume. It has been extensively updated and offers a detailed knowledge base integrated with clinical correlation. The goal is to disseminate updated basic and clinical scientific data and to portray the multidisciplinary approach of the treatment of breast disease. These objectives are essential for clinicians and scientists dedicated to this purpose, and this book successfully meets these objectives. According to the editors, this book is written for clinicians and scientists. Parts of volume 11 may be beyond the realm of necessary or desired knowledge for non-surgical clinicians and for scientists and seems more appropriate for surgeons in particular. It provides a thorough overview including historical aspects, anatomy, and physiology from a normal and abnormal perspective, as well as comprehensive information about benign and malignant processes of the breast. The medical and surgical treatment options including adjuvant therapy and the current trend in the use of sentinel node biopsy are well discussed. Pathology and molecular biology topics are well written and provide good clinical correlation. Epidemiological and genetic information, as well as preventive measures, are nicely presented. Diagnostic measures, psychosocial aspects, and medical-legal issues are appropriately included. The majority of the contributors are well respected and are considered authorities in their fields. They are also representatives from a variety of universities, all of which make this a high quality book. It is a useful text, particularly for those dedicated to the treatment of breast disease. Thedetailed information describing surgical procedures and technique could perhaps be better served in a text that focuses solely on surgical technique and principles. The updated information included in this second edition justifiably warrants replacement of the first edition.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Nora A Royer, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics) Description: The fourth edition of one of the best textbooks in the field, this is a comprehensive overview of breast surgery and breast cancer treatments for the surgeon. Purpose: The authors state that they wish to continue the tradition of the first edition, which "placed the diagnosis and therapy of breast disease in a working perspective." The fourth edition is quite timely, as this is a rapidly advancing field. As the book has grown in size and scope, it remains true to its purpose of being a comprehensive educational text on the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease, both benign and malignant. This is a very topical book, as breast cancer is the leading cancer diagnosed in women today. Audience: It is aimed at surgeons and those treating diseases of the breast, and it will be of interest to medical and radiation oncologists. It also will serve as a comprehensive resource for senior residents and fellows. Features: This book covers a multitude of issues related to breast surgery and diseases of the breast and outlines the current treatment guidelines and standards for them. The current knowledge of molecular profiling/subtyping, carcinogenesis, metastasis, and invasion are stressed. The chapter on infiltrating carcinomas of the breast is a model of clarity, yet it lays a firm foundation for future advances in this rapidly growing area. Translational research is cited throughout. Outcomes research, as applied to breast problems, is thoroughly explained and cited. New breakthroughs in surgical, medical, and radiation therapy are thoroughly explored. The book is lavishly illustrated throughout with color, and includes access to a web site with the fully searchable text and links to PubMed abstracts and other features. Assessment: This is a timely update of a standard and extremely useful book that will be of value to anyone involved in the care of patients with breast diseases. It is an excellent reference for current treatment and techniques.
