Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-An accessible, coherent, and sensitive overview of a common and frightening illness. Early chapters define and describe the disease and provide an interesting history of its incidence and severity in various parts of the world. The chapters on diagnosis and treatment are among the most thorough yet concise discussions currently available. Majure describes the treatment options patients face in simple, visually clear, and accessible terms and deals realistically, yet gently, with the aspect of the disease that is most feared by patients-its return, either in the breast or elsewhere in the body. The author deals with societal aspects of the disease and women's increasing political activism, spotlighting several of the celebrities who have chosen to be spokespersons. The final chapter looks at current research. This excellent resource for personal information and research includes a question-and-answer section geared to teens, a time line of historical development, an easy-to-understand glossary, sources for further information, and an effective index. Clearly presented black-and-white diagrams, photos, and full-page insets give more in-depth information on specific areas of interest or concern, such as mammograms, self-examination, and metastases. Outstanding in every way.-Mary R. Hofmann, Rivera Middle School, Merced, CA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
