Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michele R. Davidson, PhD, CNM, CFN, (George Mason University College of Health and Human Services)
Description: This encyclopedia-like book offers comprehensive breastfeeding information for nurses and advanced practice nurses to assist in their care of women.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide guidance and telephone triage guidelines for nurses and advanced practitioners who work with breastfeeding women. This book is a must-have resource.
Audience: The authors direct the book at nurses, physicians, breastfeeding peer counselors, and lactation care providers. It is also appropriate for advanced practice nurses, including nurse midwives and nurse practitioners, and physician assistants working in the obstetrical care area.
Features: The book covers both normal components of breastfeeding and breastfeeding difficulties. Organized in alphabetical order like an encyclopedia, it includes a definition of the topic, questions for the practitioner to ask the patient, assessment guidelines, routine care needed, self-care measures, and important conditions to report. Each entry ends with important notes for the reader. The content is comprehensive yet concise and the book provides essential information in an easy-to-read format.
Assessment: This book is much easier to use than Breastfeeding and Human Lactation, 4th edition, Riordan and Wambach (Jones & Bartlett, 2010), a classic in the field. I would actually recommend it over the Riordan for readers looking for a reference guide for patient care and not in-depth anatomy and physiology.
