Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Replete with magic-powered machinations, secret societies and doomsday divinations, the emotionally intense second volume of Berg's intrigue-laden Lighthouse Duet (after 2007's Flesh and Spirit) concludes the story of Valen, a sorcerer who finds himself at the center of a looming conflict that could cast the realms of both humankind and the feylike Danae into a nightmarish dark age. Caught between the maneuverings of the enigmatic Osriel, bastard prince of Evanore, and apocalypse priestess Sila Diaglou, Valen must determine which perceived villain is less evil. Although billed as an epic fantasy, this duology is more accurately an intimate, character-driven journey of redemption and self-discovery. Valen's heroic quest to unlock the secrets of his heritage and save a world from destruction suffers from languorous pacing throughout and may discourage readers who like their fantasy fast and furious, but fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon sequence and Sharon Shinn will be rewarded. From The Critics

As rival princes grow closer to open war over the succession to an empty throne, a rogue sorcerer's powers may hold the key to saving a dying land. Wanted by almost every figure of power, from an ambitious priestess to a bastard prince, Valen tries to fight an addiction to an enchantment that transforms pain and pleasure in order to save his world and redeem his shattered soul. The sequel to Flesh and Spiritbuilds upon the first book's events and illuminates the complex intrigues that mark the land of Navronne. Berg's lush, evocative storytelling and fully developed characters add up to a first-rate purchase for most fantasy collections.

    Excellent!

This was one of the best and most creative books I've read in the fantasy genre. I have to admit that the first book in this duet took some work to get through the first half of it because there's a lot to set up. However, the second half of the first book and this whole book were worth the setup. Well done!

    Breathtaking and Completely Satisfying

Beautiful world building, stunning prose, intriguing magic system (in both worlds), satisfyingly twisty plot and exceptionally well drawn, deep characters round out this remarkable conclusion to the Lighthouse series.

I highly recommend both Flesh and Spirit and this novel to all fantasy readers. I suggest they be read together, as one large volume.

    entertaining character study

Valen the sorcerer does not want the role he finds himself in as he fears for the realms of the mortals and the Danae the beleaguered mage is convinced a new evil era is coming to both spheres. Adding to his discomfort and uncertainty is his feeling that he is the midpoint foci of a dangerous pair of villains pulling at him. He knows he must choose to ally with Osriel the bastard prince of Evanore or priestess Sila Diaglou both believe that the end is now. His selection between the lesser of two evils even if he chooses the right one still could prove too late as doom appears the most likely outcome for humanity and or the Danae regardless of what he does. --- This sequel to FLESH AND SPIRIT is an entertaining character study as much of the fantasy saga is an introspective of Valen seeking to save the worlds while also redeeming himself for his past transgressions. Readers who prefer fast-paced action should look elsewhere. However, those in the audience who enjoy a doubting hero struggling to be a champion while hesitating at every step he takes will appreciate Carol Berg¿s intriguing BREATH AND BONE. --- Harriet Klausner
