Overview

Jasmine's life wasn't normal for a 16 year old girl. It hadn't been normal since the murder of her older sister, Daisy, two years ago. Her life had been changed forever. The monster that murdered Daisy was never caught. That was the reason her family decided to move away from their hometown in Southern California, to start over. Hopefully in a place where the last name Rourke wouldn't bring on staring or judgment or morbid curiosity.

In Lafayette, Louisiana things are quite a bit different but in a good way. Good manners, Cajun accents and a whole lot of Southern Hospitality all make her think things are going in the right direction. On top of that the most gorgeous boy she has ever met is interested in her. Her new friends are better than she could have hoped for even if she is worried about what they might think when they find out who she is. Life would be perfect if odd things didn't keep happening. Creepy phone calls, texts, and flowers in her locker start adding up quickly to something terrifying. Could the Monster have followed them to Lafayette? Was he coming after her this time? Maybe she was just worrying unnecessarily...or not.

Rachelle's Window - Rachelle Ayala

Meet the Author

Elena lives and writes in a suburb North of Los Angeles. She has never lived anywhere besides California which is probably a good thing since she hates being cold and is terrified to drive in the snow. She loves being a wife and a mother to her three kids and three dogs, although really the bulldog is the fourth child who has never matured beyond the toddler stage.
A self proclaimed nerd, she has been writing since she was a child. She has only recently, however, come out of the closet about this to her family and friends. They now understand better, but not completely, why she talks about characters in stories as if they are real people.

This book pulled me in from the very first line: "Most days I can almost forget someone murdered my sister."

Jasmine wanted to be an ordinary teenager, like everyone else, but the fact that her sister's murderer had never been caught and the incessant media attention on her and her family meant they were always on edge. She and her family moves from Burbank, California to a small town in Louisiana. For the first time, she could be anonymous, the new girl in school, unburdened from her past.

I cheered for Jasmine as she made new friends, took on a lot of responsibility for her younger siblings, and falls for the hottest guy on campus. Little things disturbed me and I knew the drama would not be over. However the author painted life in the small town vividly and still gave time for pranks, pep rallies, and normal girltalk. She contrasted the familiarity of the small town where residents knew each other for generations and were often related, with the impersonal atmosphere of California.

Once I hit 55% I knew I wouldn't sleep until I completed the book. The villain was cold and calculating, and the story unfolded in an edge-of-your-seat cat and mouse game. The narrator's voice was authentic and engaging, and I absolutely loved the boys in the story, from the loquacious Trenton to the bratty younger brother to the heart-throb boyfriend.

Extremely well done and fast paced, with a heroine you can't help loving and rooting for.

    Pert Near Faultless

This book is immensely hard to put down once you start reading. From the first line the reader is pulled
into a world with both jubilant and nightmarish characteristics. There’s no time to pause; you must
continue on the journey you began without rest, just as the main character does. And what a character
    she is…

Jasmine is a perfectly blended personality. She’s real. Believable. She’s a teenager with the same
worries and fears as her peers. Does the cutest boy in school like me? Will I make the track team?
But there is also something dark inside, a survival instinct that her friends have never needed to
    cultivate.

The story moves quickly and the plot points are flawlessly placed. Dillon uses the setting to create an
atmosphere both idyllic and terrifying. She uses southern charm to its fullest and as someone from the
South I can say she hit the nail on the head. (Though there are plenty of folks the complete opposite of
the characters, just as in any region)

Breathe is a near faultless work of reading enjoyment and I recommend it highly.

I received a copy of Breathe from the author when I interviewed her for my blog. This in no way
    influenced my review.

I am 11 years old and this is one of my all time favorite books. There were parts that made me laugh and cry. There were times where I was mad at a character for making a choice and points where I was so excited I could not stop reading. This is a great book for any mystery lover. It felt like I was in the place of the brave 16 year old and loved every second of it. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

I think this is the first YA, thriller, suspense that I’ve ever read and let me say, Dillon has hit a homerun with it. She nailed the voices of the teens and I loved the interaction of Jasmine and her younger siblings. This was a book that I stayed up way too late to finish and boy was I glad I did. Can’t wait to read the sequel Shimmer.

    Could. Not. Put. This. Down…

I received this book because I was asked to review the second book in this series.  Since I had not read Breathe yet, I had to so I could understand the second book, Shimmer.

When I got the book, I took a peek at the first page just to get an idea of what this book was about.  My plan was to finish the book I was currently reading and get back to this.

Well, that plan went right out the window.  I couldn’t stop after reading just the first page of this book!

This book was sweet and scary all at the same time!  I was terrified and sad for Jasmine, the main character, throughout the book.  There were a bunch of different characters in the book but the author wrote it in a way that you didn’t confuse them and knew the relation ship from one person to the next (there was a big family – really big – in this book).  The main characters were all well developed and had distinct personalities.

The terrifying piece of the book played out throughout the entire story.  Just when your nerves were starting to settle down, some hint of past terror Jasmine lived through would show up again. The author had me making guesses as to who the Monster really was in the book.  It was really well done, as there were hints that lead the reader off in different directions.

There was also a lot of agony in the story.  The agony of losing a sister, of having to lie and keep secrets from those you love, and of having to make bad decisions for (hopefully!!) the overall good.

I found myself holding my breath at times while reading this book.  When I finished the book, I realized I just wasn’t ready to start reading a new book because I wasn’t ready to let these characters or this story go right away.  Luckily, book two, Shimmer, was waiting for me!!

    Disappointing

The characters were so flat and under developed. Sorry ladies...to my regret, there are no Eastons out there. White knights are not very interesting anyway. Story line could have been gripping in more capable hands, but the shoddy writing style killed it. Every payoff in the plot was undeserved. You have no hope of detecting whodunnit at all.

I normally do not like thrillers. I don¿t like reading about

I normally do not like thrillers. I don’t like reading about murders, people being kidnapped or tortured, etc. If I ever feel like reading a thriller I tend to stick to YA because it is just intense enough without all the graphic violence of adult books. Such is the case with this book. It was intense at times and truly scary but only enough to keep me reading and not enough to make to make me throw the book away.
Jasmine is a teenage girl trying to put her life back together after a tragedy. Years earlier her older sister Daisy, whom she absolutely adored, was kidnapped and murdered and the killer was never found. Now her family has moved across the country in order to have a fresh start. The problem is that you can’t always run away from your problems and Jasmine has a big one. After her sister was murdered she developed a horrible habit of passing out when she is stressed or startled. One of her first nights in her new town she is innocently startled and collapses in to the arms of an amazing guy. Guess her fainting isn’t always bad. Then, just when her new life starts to seem like it may be wonderful, she begins to get strange messages about her ending up like her sister. Either someone is playing a sick joke or the killer has followed them.
The characters in this book are great. I did love Jasmine and reading about her story, she is strong and resourceful and will do anything to protect what is left of her family. No matter how wonderful Jasmine was, for some reason the character I liked the best was her little brother. Maybe because I have younger brothers, but who knows. Caedan is everything you think of when you imagine a younger brother. He can be frustrating and annoying but he is loyal and loves his family fiercely.
I loved the plot line in this book. Maybe because I am a girl or maybe because I have a teenage daughter but the idea of stalking terrifies me. What could be creepier than some unknown guy creeping around spying on you when you least expect it? I can guarantee that the idea of this poor girl possibly being stalked by the killer of her sister definitely keeps this book intense.
With great characters, a great plot and great twists and turns to keep you drawn in this book is a wonderful read.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
