Andrew Weil, the guru of complementary medicine and author of Spontaneous Healing, offers a healing technique that is not only free, but can be done anywhere, any time: breathing. "Wherever you have nerves," says Dr. Weil, "You have the opportunity for improvement using breath work." The first CD of this set is a clear lecture about the benefits of conscious breathing, its spiritual roots (prana yoga), the physiological rationale, the emotional connection, and examples from his medical practice. On the second CD, Weil offers eight separate exercises, starting with just noticing the breath, the reaction of the body, and how the mind tends to wander. Although the mind will constantly be distracted by worries, aches and pains, and emotional turmoil, Weil advises, just come back to following the breath. As you progress through the exercises, you'll learn more advanced techniques, like quick in-out breathing through the nose (a speedy pick-me-up). During most practice sessions, you'll hear "silence" or Weil's own breathing. Other practice sessions offer relaxing music (Eastern-flavored with flute and drone) by Mark McCoin. Most exercises are specifically that -- sit up straight and practice, using active imagination -- but many principles can be applied during the course of the day. "You can't always control your emotions," says Weil, "but you can control your breathing.... Pay attention to the breath to put the brain in a neutral place." Weil's advice: Aim for slower, deeper, quieter, and more regular.

Dr. Andrew Weil's Breathing: The Master Key to Self-Healing is a double-disc set that comprehensively explains and demonstrates different forms of therapeutic breathing and their benefits. Indeed, the first disc is nothing but Weil's explanation of the benefits of "breathwork," assuring that the listener is well-grounded in his yoga-based pranayama (energy-increasing) techniques. The second disc puts these theories into practice, with Dr. Weil guiding the listener through eight relaxing and energizing breath excercises. Unlike his 1997 set Sound Body, Sound Mind, Breathing contains very little music, but for anyone interested in learning and mastering Eastern-based breathing techniques, it's an essential audio guide.

Terrific for all, especially those who can't slow down, turn their thougths, worries off by themselves and possilby prone to panic & anxiety. We all need to slow down, learn to live w/ the basic foundations of life! Because here we are! It is wonderfully relaxing; yet powerful to have the knowledge and the ability to breathe in energy and life source and it's free and for the taking.... I am a believer this is transforming & can help us heal. Dr. Weil is amazing. I look forward to my time to be continue working on me for my sake and to be an example to those I love. It's about balance and love of life, to me. Great gift for yourself & others!
