Meet the Author

Juan Carlos Rivera Quintana (Cuba, 1960) is a writer, journalist, and university professor. He received his degree in arts and sciences from the University of Havana in 1978 and five years later he earned another degree in journalism. Later on he earned his masters in planification and management of communication processes from the National University of la Plata in Argentina.
As a journalist he has covered the visits to Cuba of various foreign heads of state, including those of Mikhail Gorbachev, Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, Daniel Ortega and Felipe Gonzalez. In 1996 he received the Félix Elmuza Medal awarded by the Association of Cuban Journalists for his distinguished professional career. He has also been the recipient of other professional honors in recognition of his coverage of international conflicts and wars. In 2006 he was awarded the Second Latin American Health Journalism Award by OMS-OPS and the New Journalism Foundation, which is run by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Cartagena, Colombia. As a writer, he has seen several of his books published, including the recent A Brief History of Charlemagne: The Sacred Roman-Germanic Empire (Nowtilus).
