Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
In Civil War–era Seattle, a married man can acquire 640 acres of virgin timberland. Unfortunately for lumberjack Joe Denton, his wife has just died. It doesn't take him long, however, to hit on a plan that satisfies his two big needs: he will buy one of the women arriving from the East, marry her in name only, and keep her around as a full-time cook and housekeeper. What he doesn't bargain for is that his prospective bride turns out to be Anna Ivey, a feisty young woman who really doesn't want to tie the knot with this very presumptuous stranger. A faith-based romance by the author of Deep in the Heart of Trouble and Courting Trouble.
Publishers Weekly

Popular evangelical Christian novelist Gist tells a could-have-happened tale of a Seattle landowner who requires a wife to keep his 640 acres. In the land replete with timber but few women, widower Joe Denton signs a contract with Asa Mercer to deliver the wife he needs to ensure his land rights. Unfortunately, 19-year-old Anna Ivey doesn't realize she's signed on for marriage; she only wants passage out West and a job. Sparks fly as tempers flare when Joe and Anna discover they are at cross-purposes. Acquiescing to common sense as well as a sense of desperation, the two agree to work together temporarily. As Anna cooks up a storm in payment for the traveling debt Joe incurred on her behalf, Joe cooks up his own scheme for wooing Anna into marriage. Gist's work is comical, sassy and sweet-yet her story's ending ties together a bit too neatly for readers who relish real-life finales. (June)

Deeanne Gist once again spins a great story to engage the imagination and challenge the heart.

This was not only a fun read but totally captivating. Great escapism while daring you to hope and dream for the characters to rise above their past problems and hurts; and embrace love and one another. I had so much fun with this book I couldn't put it down and then I didn't want it to end.

    Love This Book!

A Bride in the Bargain was the second book I read by Deanne Gist. The first one I read by her was Maid To Match. While I loved Maid To Match, I'd have to say this one's my favorite so far.
Anna is a young woman who does not want to get married! Yet here she finds herself in California, with a complete stranger, and their standing at the alter without her even knowing it's their wedding ceremony! She definitely puts that to an abrupt halt. But as time goes on, her view on marriage changes.
Joe Denton is a hulking lumberjack on a mission. He's going to save his land. He's even willing to marry a complete stranger in order to do so. Yet what he doesn't know is that this stranger is not willing to marry him. He's definitely in for a ride.
The only thing I didn't care about this book was that the characters seemed a bit too shallow. Not rude shallow, but not very in depth. Don't get me wrong, I really, thoroughly enjoyed the book. There was just so much physicalness and not enough time for them to get to know each other, which makes for some unbelieveable circumstances. I did like this book!

    disappointed

I'm surprised to find I'm the only one not thrilled by this book. The 3rd book I own by Deanne Gist and I never should have purchased it ..... and wouldn't have it I hadn't gotten it for so cheap. Though Deanne Gist is a well-written author, all of her books have bored me to tears. None of her heroines are likable, and in general the characters aren't interesting or well-developed. Many things the characters do simply are just not believable, as in the way a real person would act. So no more Gist for me. I much prefer Lynn Austin's fascinating novels.

    Enjoyable historical fiction

A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist is an enjoyable historical fiction novel. The setting is 1860s in Seattle.

Anna Ivey leaves her home and heads West, signing on to be a cook. Joe Denton has signed a contract with Asa Mercer for a bride. His land is at stake if he doesn't get a bride within the time frame set by the judge. Mercer delivers Anna who has only agreed to be a cook. One might think Anna will agree to be Joe's bride, but she will not budge on her position against marriage. Will Joe be able to find a bride before it's too late and he loves his beloved land?

This is the first book I read by this author, and I enjoyed it. I found it interesting that actual events were used to create the story. I have read many Christian books and found some of the details in this one to be a bit much. There were no inappropriate scenes but a couple times I felt like too much was said regarding Joe's thoughts towards Anna. The setting, characters, and story were all entertaining and it is well written in my opinion.

Another great read from Deeanne Gist!

Anna Ivey strongly suspects Hoke will eventually attempt to rape her and she will kill in him. Opting to avoid that particular situation, she agrees to travel with Asa Mercer to Seattle, Washington, where she will work as a cook for Mr. Joe Denton and his lumberjack employees. When Anna arrives in Seattle and discovers that Joe is expecting a wife, she is less than agreeable. Her refusal to marry Joe not only inconveniences him, but also endangers 320 acres of his land. Can Joe overcome Anna's aversion to marriage? There's plenty of attraction between Anna and Joe, but will love enter the picture?

A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist manages to be a classic, historical romance while avoiding many of the cliches that commonly accompany a storyline like this. Authentic characters, romantic tension, and just a tad of suspense makes this novel difficult to put down. I can definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good romance.

I liked the characters and the circumstance, however, too many negative happenings occurred. A bit more happiness would be appreciated.

Anna Ivey has just traveled for seven months on a ship with a bunch of mail order brides and doesn't have a clue. She doesn't know she is a mail order bride. She apparently doesn't know they are either. Did she never have a conversation with anyone? Then her poor hapless groom (who she refuses to marry) hires her on as a cook for his lumber camp and when she gets to his home tells that he has to sleep in the barn because it wouldn't be proper for them to sleep in the same house. Does he take her back to town and find another cook. No, he goes out to sleep in the barn. Didn't get half way through it. Big disappointment

    Very good read.

I had not read a book from Mrs. Gist in a few years. I recieved an email from her about discounts on her books and decided to get one. I truly enjoyed this book. I thought it was more realistic than some christain novels where people never touch or just hold hands. I like knowing the leading characters thoughts. The story was well developed and kept me interested. I would have liked an epilogued to know about their lives five or ten years later.

Another great novel by Deeanne Gist!! She sure knows how to write a captivating story. I laughed, I cried, and felt so close to the characters.

Anna Ivey, destitute and desperate, flees her home in Massachusetts to get away from her employer and start a new life in Seattle Washington. She reads a brochure that promises work at her destination. What she doesn't know is that her transportation arrangement and the contract aren't what they seem. Can Anna survive without a plan once she arrives?

Joe Benton becomes a lumberjack after moving from Maine to Seattle with a dream of making a home for his wife and enjoying his livelihood. But, before his wife can join him there, she passes away. Because of not having a wife, half of his land may be taken away. Each married couple may claim 640 acres but only 320 is permitted for a single man. His whole career, and the men who work for him, are in jeopardy of losing their jobs. Will Joe find a way to hold onto his land?

The author paints her characters with a fine brush. One cannot help but embrace them as if they are standing right in front of you. Anna is young but isn't intimidated easily. She has spunk and sass which catches the eyes and hearts of those who meet her. Ronny, a young man, really takes a shining to Miss Ivey. Aside from the main characters, Anna and Joe, Ronny is my favorite character. It is enjoyable seeing him grow up and mature. I wanted to hug him several times throughout the story.

I highly recommend this book for those who love historical fiction and want a fun and charming read.
