Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Accompanying an exhibition of masterpieces from the Mary Griggs Burke collection, the largest and most encompassing private collection of Japanese art outside of Japan, this exhibition catalog showcases the finest works of the collection, dating from the proto-literate era (ca. 10,500 B.C.E.-ca. 300 B.C.E.) through the Edo period (1615-1868). Murase, a Columbia University professor and research curator at the Metropolitan Museum, advised Burke in her nearly four decades of collecting activities. Following a chronological organization, he explores and demonstrates the impact of Buddhism and Chinese literati painting on the formation of the Japanese artistic tradition. Extravagantly illustrated--more than two thirds of the nearly 450 illustrations in color--and supported by a glossary are a list of selected readings, this book lives up to Metropolitan Museum standard. This handsome volume will be a delightful addition to large art collections in academic and public libraries.--Lucia S. Chen, NYPL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\
