Editorial Reviews

Mary Lou Burket
It's striking that a book depicting artificial structures made of concrete, stone, and steel should feel so warm... this is a book of wonders.
— Riverbank Review
Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Bridges connect people and places, and in this informational picture book readers are connected with a wide variety of bridges found throughout the world. The book takes readers from a 19th-century covered bridge in New Hampshire to a rope suspension bridge in Peru, from a 17th-century curved wooden beam bridge in Japan to several stone arch bridges throughout Europe built during the first century, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. Modern constructions such as the bowstring arch bridge in Australia and the Brooklyn Bridge are featured as well. Each two-page spread contains a brief description of how and why the bridge was built. The full-color illustrations have a three-dimensional quality about them-a combination of drawing, painting, and papercutting. The layout is crisp and clean. Marvelous small touches such as ducks on a river or people fishing make this book inviting. All kinds of discussion can follow a reading of this book: the types of construction, historical time periods, geographical locations, and architecture. A discussion of the symbolism of a bridge is a perfect follow-up to the rainbow "bridge" on the last page.
