Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-A sequel to The Royal Switch (Delacorte, 1996). Here, Princess Amanda and her parents are visiting New York City to do some fund-raising for the National Portrait Gallery, and her American friend, Emily, is invited to stay with them at their hotel. The girls notice three suspicious people who turn out to be jewel thieves. Emily's parents, who are musical agents, are sponsoring a benefit for homeless people. While touring the city, the girls (who are always accompanied by Princess Amanda's driver) become acquainted with a destitute boy who agrees to attend the benefit so he can communicate what it's like to be homeless. He also helps the girls catch the thieves. The accompanying illustrations depict the look-alike friends who have an amazing resemblance to Sarah Ferguson. The plot and characterizations are flimsy, especially that of the boy, who is given a home by one of the families whose jewels he helped to save. The one believable aspect of this tale is the background on royal life. This book will appeal only to serious Sarah Ferguson fans, and those fans are not likely to be children.-Anne Parker, Milton Public Library, MA

"What's wrong?" Amanda asked.

"Well...Don't turn around, but--Amanda, I said don't turn around!"

"Oh, Emily, it's a reflex, don't you know? If you say to someone 'Don't think about elephants,' what do they think about immediately?"

Emily laughed. "Okay, but I didn't want him to know we saw him."

"Who?"

"This boy. Please, Amanda, don't look at him, okay?"

"All right."

"It's a real grungy-looking boy, and he's watching us. He's kind of leaning against the doorway, you know, where you can go sit inside if you want."

"How do you know he's watching us?" Amanda asked.

"I can tell, believe me. He hasn't taken his eyes off us this whole time."

Amanda held up her hand, and Jack was instantly at her side.

"Emily believes there is someone staring at us, Jack," Amanda whispered.

"Where?"

Emily turned to show Jack. "He's--Hey!"

"What?"

"He's gone. He isn't there anymore."
