Overview

The first question one must ask upon listening to Gomez's Bring It On single is why the two great B-sides here weren't included on the band's Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline collection. Most people looking into this single are already familiar with "Bring It On," a track taken from the band's second album, Liquid Skin. That's right; the song isn't taken from the band's full-length debut, Bring It On, which shares the single's title. That dilemma aside, "Bring It On," shortened by about ten seconds for radio airplay, is an excellent, moody single. The song features the band's trademark gruff and breathy vocal interplay from their accomplished cache of singers. Alternating between fast and slow segments, the band affects a noisy, cool blues pose. "Dire Tribe" is an energetic joy, mixing rolling piano, crashing percussion, and harmony-based vocals detailing the joys of an assortment of drugs: ketamine, lithium, codeine, mescaline, and a boatload of others. The song is cocky and swinging; it might be Gomez's most stylish, fun recording, with the punch line being "I'd rather die from emphysema than learn to just get by." "M57" is quite touching. Over quiet percussive ticks and acoustic guitars, the vocals tell a tale of a sad couple going "through a run of bad luck" with the man telling the woman "Please, please, please chill out; it ain't exactly easy for me." It's a song that would sound appropriate coming from the grunge scene of Seattle circa 1992, but it's more subtle and gentle. Gomez never fail to shock in their mastery of genres based in the United States; that's an impressive trait for a British band. Bring It On is an excellent single paired with two fantastic B-sides.
