Library Journal
Bringing Up Father, a comical chronicle of the nouveau riche, was one of the most popular newspaper strips of the 20th century's first half. When gregarious Irish American working man Jiggs made it big, his homely wife, Maggie, became a fashion-following social climber. Yet, despite her haranguing attempts to "improve" him, Jiggs is happiest sneaking off to Dinty Moore's tavern to play cards with his old working-class pals. NBM has reprinted the strip's initial 1913–14 episodes; here, IDW's Library of American Comics collects 19 months' of strips from 1939 to 1940, with Sunday pages in wonderful full color. Domestic comedy predominates in the book's first half, with the second seeing the pair touring America along with their beautiful daughter, Nora, and her new husband, clueless British aristocrat Lord Worthnotten (McManus's punning names are one of the strip's delights). VERDICT McManus and assistant Zeke Zekley fill the Sunday pages with Deco-inspired design and marvelously detailed landscapes, city scenes, and crowds (often of Jiggs's wide circle of friends). Starring a harried husband full of humor, this is both historically important and enjoyable; for all collections.—S.R.
