Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda Ledbetter
The Fairyland Olympics begin in just a few days, but Jack Frost and his goblins are out to ruin the fun. They have stolen the Sports Fairies' seven magical objects, including Brittany's magic basketball, and brought them to the human world so they can practice their sports before the Fairyland Olympics. Rachel and Kirsty have befriended the fairies, and now they are on the lookout for any sign of Brittany's magic ball. A brochure leads the two girls to the local recreational center, where they battle against the goblin team to recover the magic ball and return it to Brittany. A part of the "Sports Fairies" series, this book does an excellent job of bringing readers up to date in the story line, providing all needed exposition in only one page. While Meadows does incorporate some basketball terminology, readers who are unfamiliar with the sport should still be able to follow along as much of the story is not dependent on that knowledge. The reading level stated on the book is second grade, but the chapters are longer and may make this book better suited for older second grade readers. As the girls in the story must use some deception in retrieving the basketball, parents may want to dialogue with their children about their values and how the girls' actions compare to that value system.
