Overview

The economic downturn has forced nearly everyone into a life of limited means, but author Laura Lee was broke before it was cool. She won’t tell anyone to clip coupons or forego their morning latte—in fact, she won’t give any guidance on how to be saved from a dark financial destiny. Instead she provides readers with a psychological how-to full of fun tidbits. Broke is Beautiful is an insightful compendium of history, inspiration, facts, and humor that all celebrate the lack of money as a gateway to more serenity, self-awareness, and yes, even security.

In the tradition of Alain de Botton’s How Proust Can Change Your Life and Eric Wilson’s Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy, here is an unconventional take on a subject that is relevant to us all. It is quirky comfort for the (literally) poor soul: offering historical and geographic perspective, ponderings on consumerism and credit scores, and even recipes for ramen noodles.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

DianaPageJordan.com
“Read “Broke is Beautiful” – It’s Funny!... Lee throws out facts that’ll make you feel better if, for example, you’re trying to get by on minimum wage. “Half of the people on earth survive on less than $2 a day.” She lays it on, fact after fact, until you just have to admit you’re lucky to be living in these times.”

Brokelyn.com
“Author Laura Lee may have well written the Brokelyn manifesto, the recession-victims’ King James Bible and the brokester I Ching all wrapped into one. Her new book, Broke is Beautiful, is a vast, thoughtful and intensely researched tome on the value of living the cash-strapped life.”

Midwest Book Review, June 2010
“Laura Lee gives readers a good array of thoughts and wisdom and makes for a very entertaining and fun read. "Broke is Beautiful" is a choice and highly recommended read which shouldn't be missed for those who want to live well when they got nothing in the wallet."

    I Also Recommend:

If broke is beautiful, I've never felt so beautiful in all my life!

With chapters like, "If you like it should you really put a ring on it?", how could it be anything but a fun read. Laura Lee has written a phenomenal book about the cash-strapped life and given me mucho information about the history of thrift. This book appeared in my life at such a fortuitous moment, somewhere between paying the utility bills ahead of time and rubbing two nickels together. It was not preachy and in fact reading it was similar to sitting in the backyard at a cafe table with a dear friend, holding a tall glass of iced tea in our hands and engaging in the most casual conversation of our lives but knowing it was also quite significant to the health of our marriages and our deflated pocketbooks. It is a book that has solidified certain things for me. Namely, I do not need to own an expensive handbag, wear the most expensive lingerie, or strut around in expensive designer clothing in order to feel good about myself...not that it has ever been a problem for me. It feels good to know that there are others like Laura out there who truly appreciate the value of what is meaningful and important in our lives, loves quality goods but doesn't think it's necessary to take out a 2nd mortgage to have the finer things and knows a thing or two about saving up for a monsoon day.
