Overview

Kit Colbana: assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire. Now broken. She always expected her past to catch up with her but never like this. Haunted by nightmares and stripped of her identity, she's retreated to Wolf Haven, the no-man's land where she found refuge years before. But while she might want to hide away from the rest of the world, the rest of the world isn't taking the hint.

Dragged kicking and screaming back into life, Kit is thrust head-first into an investigation surrounding the theft of an ancient relic...one that she wants nothing to do with. Her instincts tell her it's a bad idea to just leave the relic lying about, but finding it might be just as bad.

Forced to face her nightmares, she uncovers hidden strength and comes face to face with one of the world's original monsters.

If she survives the job, she won't be the same...and neither will those closest to her.

~Reviewed by SUZANNE & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog
After the events of Night Blade tore my heart apart I was eager to dive in to Broken Blade and see what happens next. Kit had been tortured and broken by a vampire, a step away from killing herself rather than endure more, before she was rescued by her friends and her lover. In Broken Blade we read as Kit tries to cope with the aftermath of her torture and eventually try to pull together a semblance of her former life. But, when she takes what looks like a simple job in an attempt to start her life again, it open’s a Pandora’s box full of problems…

Night Blade completely awed me, it left me a slobbery teary mess by the last page, with the horrific intensity as you read Kit get tortured by a sadistic monster and her obvious trauma when she is rescued, all expertly written by J.C. Daniels. Maybe it was a little inevitable that the book after those events wouldn’t quite be as enthralling, it was still heartbreaking and emotional; however, it never provoked quite the same reaction as Night Blade.

Broken Blade could almost be broken in two halves, the first half we watch as Kit tries to cope with the everyday and is pushed by her friends to start living life again. And although interesting and tragic this section of the book was fairly slow meaning the book took a while to get going, which would be expected I imagine if Kit had gone to her normal self after her ordeal I would have thrown the it down in disgust. The second half of Broken Blade was when it started to get a little more interesting as Kit focuses on a case that turns far more complex than she ever expected. This brought some action into the book and sped up the pace of the book, making it a lot more exciting.

What really made Broken Blade shine for me though was Damon, Kit’s kind-of former lover, and the way he was treating Kit. If I wasn’t already in love with Damon, I would be head over heels by now, his love and devotion to Kit really came through in this book and seeing his pain over what happened to Kit was almost as hard to see as Kit’s pain.

This was a great read, maybe not my favourite installment in the series, but it left many intriguing plot lines open and was packed full of emotion and a little bit of action, I can’t wait to read the next in Colbana Files series.

I was super lucky to get a review copy thanks to the author through NetGalley. This is one of my favorite series ever and after reading Blade Song, I needed to read Broken Blade. Let me just say right now, it was awesome!

I'm warning you up front, while I loved this book, it is just as emotional a read as Blade Song was...i.e. have tissues handy or a friend to text you through the tough spots.

Kit Colbana is one of my favorite characters ever. She is way stronger than even she realizes. I get why she was hiding out at the beginning of this book, but was so glad to see glimpses of the Kit I've come to know and love as the story progressed. I'm a romantic at heart, so I want Kit and Damon back together now! I understand Kit needs to heal, recover, and find herself again, but that doesn't keep me from wanting everything to be perfect now.

There is so much that goes on in this world with each book, I feel as if I will give tons of spoilers away if I say too much. I will say the world building that happens in each book just gets better and better. I love getting to find out something new about at least one character in every single book. Even with Kit not back to fully being herself in this book, I still loved watching her start to fight to come back.

The Kit Colbana series is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series out at this time...maybe even of all the UF series I read. I can't wait to see where Ms. Daniels takes this series with the next book.

***No spoilers for Broken Blade, but may have spoilers fro previ

***No spoilers for Broken Blade, but may have spoilers fro previous books.**

I have loved this series since I read the free prequel short story, A Stroke of Dumb Luck.  I was so happy when Ms. Walker decided to continue with this series under a different pen name.  This is a series that you must read the books in order, though the prequel is an added treasure, not a must read.

Book three starts off pretty much where book two leaves us, Kit is hiding at Wolf Haven trying to recover mentally from her torture from the vampire Jude in Canada.  Kit considers herself completely broken and she has no desire to see herself fixed.  She feels that with the connection between her and her sword broken, she is worthless.  She constantly hears voices in her head telling her how worthless she is, voices from Jude and her Grandmother.

TJ being the person, or wolf, that she is, knows that Kit needs time and gives her time, but also knows that Kit cannot spend the rest of her life working at the bar.  She sends Kit on what should be a pretty easy job of finding a cat that is probably the father of a witch girl's unborn baby.  As with anything with Kit, it isn't that easy.  The case takes a very dangerous turn, but once again, Kit has extremely powerful friends that won't let her face it on her own.

I don't want to say too much more about the plot, so as not to spoil anything.

Damon and the cats all have a part to play.  We get to see some time with him, Sam, Chang and Doyle.  We get to learn a ton about Doyle, and I just love this kid.  I don't think there is anyone more loyal to Kit that he is.  Kit also takes a visit to the witches, where she learns a lot about her "client".  Justin is also a great friend, who stands behind Kit once again.  We learn a lot about this past.  The more I learn about Justin, the more I like him.

As I've come to expect with stories from Ms. Daniels, this story isn't without heartbreak and lose.  We see Kit grow as a person and we see that she is healing, but not easily.  We do see that there is hope in the future for her.  Every time I finish a book in this series, I'm counting the days until the next book comes out.

OMG. Just finished. Broken blade loved it. So glad she wasn't broken the whole book but that's just not kits style. I like How you have her get a tat to help get over her self being broken. I can't wait for her and Damon to get back together because that's what made me fall in love with the books in the first place. I like Justin as Well he is pretty awesome. Doyle is great and he is Kits ppl. WOW! Love it. WHEN DOES THE NEXT ONE COME OUT?

The third book in the Colbana Files is an intriguing urban fantasy full of drama and suspense.
Assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire, Kit Colbana has retreated to Wolf Haven broken, haunted by nightmares and stripped of her identity. But she’s dragged kicking and screaming back into life as she is thrust into an investigation surrounding an ancient relic, one she really wants nothing to do with.  As she is forced to fight her nightmares, she uncovers hidden strength and comes face to face with one of the world’s original monsters.
This steady pace plot is full of suspense, drama, action, emotional turmoil and magic.  The author brings it all to life with well written words that paint vivid images of every scene and great detail of the personalities and emotions of the strong and compelling characters that make it easy for the reader to feel as if they are part of the story.
There is some romance as the Kit and Damon try to overcome the past and you can almost feel the heat of the attraction between the two. All the characters contribute greatly to the story and the author makes it feel as if you know them all really well.
The story is intriguing and has some unexpected twists that keep the reader guessing and the battle scene at the end was well orchestrated and believable. The author spices things up even more with some unique and interesting twists to mythology that adds a refreshing spin to the supernatural world.
The author has created an entertaining fantasy world with wonderful characters that capture the reader’s imagination and ensure that they want more.  I have not read the first two in the series, but the author did a great job of giving me just enough insight into the previous books for me to follow the story and without giving too much information.  I am definitely adding this author and series to “to read” list.

I love this author, and this series. This is the third book in the series. The second book ended in heart ache and pain, this book continued with that but as the book went on I watched Kit pull herself out of the darkness and begin to rebuild herself. I highly recommend this author and I can't wait to read the next book.

An excellent addition to an intense urban fantasy series. 4.5 s

An excellent addition to an intense urban fantasy series.

    4.5 stars.

“Broken Blade” by J.C. Daniels (Shiloh Walker) continues the story of Kit Colbana as she struggles to recover from the horrific events that took place in “Night Blade” (the second story in the ‘Colbana Files’ series). So many aspects of Kit’s life are broken but as her friends struggle to convince her that many things can be repaired, she is unable to believe them even as she slowly tries to pick up the shattered remnants of her life. Accepting a case that requires her to interact with those she would rather avoid causes her to become involved in a struggle that turns a well-known myth on its end and has far-reaching implications for witches, aneira, were and vampires as well as the offshoot races. The assignment may end up costing far more than Kit wants to pay but it also may be just what she needs to start on her road to recovery, if she survives long enough to try.

This intense urban fantasy series has provided a serious crucible for its main character to undergo and it was difficult to read about what Kit experienced in the last book. Understandably, she feels broken and isolated from those who care about her but she slowly has to start accessing that inner strength that was honed during her abusive upbringing. It is tough to follow her slow climb from the depths of despair but the case that is foisted upon her does an excellent job of mobilizing her allies while forcing her to face her new realities even as it uncovers some mind-boggling facts. It definitely would be advised to read all of the books in the series so that appropriate background is available but probably best if one has a couple of days put aside because this mesmerizing storyline makes one race to the finish of each book and impatiently await further developments. The title of this gripping story is “Broken Blade” but fortunately, the descriptor should be ‘badly damaged’ but hopefully repairable and persevering. This was an excellent addition to the series and provides even more mysteries to be solved and I impatiently look forward to reading the next installment.

    BOOK SYNOPSIS

Kit Colbana: assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire. Now broken. She always expected her past to catch up with her but never like this. Haunted by nightmares and stripped of her identity, she’s retreated to Wolf Haven, the no-man’s land where she found refuge years before. But while she might want to hide away from the rest of the world, the rest of the world isn't taking the hint.
Dragged kicking and screaming back into life, Kit is thrust head-first into an investigation surrounding the theft of an ancient relic...one that she wants nothing to do with. Her instincts tell her it’s a bad idea to just leave the relic lying about, but finding it might be just as bad.

Forced to face her nightmares, she uncovers hidden strength and comes face to face with one of the world’s original monsters.

If she survives the job, she won’t be the same...and neither will those closest to her.

    My Thoughts

I believe that events and circumstances in our past forge us into who we are mentally, physically, spiritually and that in some cases they make us stronger for having experienced them in ways that we do not even begin to understand until faced with even harsher trials that life throws our way.

In Book 1-Blade Song Kit Colbana is a bright light as the starring character in an exciting new series for lovers of the Urban Fantasy genre, in Book 2-Night Blade that light dimmed into darkness and drug the reader into it so deep there seemed to be no way out and now in Book 3-Broken Blade Kit has taken our hand and is slowly shattering the darkness as she has begun rebuilding her fractured identity.

Once again as we descend into the world created for us by author J.C. Daniels the highly emotional tension at the end of Book 2-Night Blade fresh in our minds we are hoping that Kit can rise above the mental and physical ordeal that brought her to the brink of a despair so deep that she is still struggling to recover her indomitable will.

As always the shocks, the thrills, the action, the suspense and the sheer joy of the re-emergence of Kit over the course of the book was worth the wait thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for approval to read one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series follow-up stories! I have to say that am thankful this story is no where near the darkly painful read that the previous one became at many points in the narrative, it is nice to see that though things have changed once again for Kit they are changing in a positive way that proves once and for all that inner strength overcomes many more of life’s obstacles than we ever thought possible. Plus it also proves that the opinions of those who care for us far outweigh those who wish us harm in the long run!

Series order to read books that have released so far:

    Novella-A Stroke Of Dumb Luck , Book 1-Blade Song , Book 2-Night Blade , Book 3-Broken Blade .

If you have not already ordered your copy do not delay you are not going to want to wait to read this one if you are already a fan of the series and if not you are missing out!

    My rating: 4 of 5 ¿¿

Kit was a far cry from the warrior she used to be. Struggling to get up every day after being rescued from the hands of the vampire Jude, who used her as his 'play-thing' and subject of torture for a while. Not even her scars would heal, he made sure of that.

Trusting only one or two friends, not wanting to face anyone especially not Damon, the shifter who had dumped her right before she was taken, she holed up in her friend's bar slinging drinks to get through the day. But when a young girl, pregnant by a shifter, is in trouble, Kit knows it is time for her to step up and help.

She never expected her first venture back into the real world to end up turning into a full fledged battle. A battle which would require her to pull in every connection she has, since something is determined to upset the precarious balance of their world.....and destroy them in the process.

    ******

A highly imaginative and descriptive tale of mysticism.

The story describes the difficult (mostly) psychological revival of a warrior, someone very much in control of their own and other's destinies, who spent an extended period of time at the complete mercy of another's sick and twisted idea of 'fun'. Surviving the physical hardships of such an ordeal is the simple part. For Kit, more than just the experience itself, but also the events leading up to, and all the emotions that came with it, have become stuck in time and are difficult to process away. Moving forward from that period, not just physically but emotionally will take it's toll and whether friendship, and relationship will be able to survive is the million dollar question.

Her friends and her lover, Damon are stuck in the void with her, not able to move on until she does. All of them wrecked by guilt for what they have done or failed to do that might have contributed to the situation.

This new challenge that has fallen into kit's lap is so large and all-encompassing, it forces her beyond what she might otherwise have been comfortable with in her recovery process, speeding up her reconnection with her 'old' life and some of her healing.

Fantasy and the paranormal are not normally genres that have my preference, but I love JC Daniel's (Shiloh Walker) writings and given the opportunity to read this book, I could not let it pass. I was not disappointed, there is something mesmerizing in the way she uses words, a flow in the writing that keeps you hooked. So despite the fact that this is the first book in this series I have read, I was easily drawn in and picked up on the overall context quite comfortably. Well done!

¿A haunting, charged and powerful story of survival.¿
