Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Today's elementary children are involved in soccer, skateboarding, and a myriad of other activities that can expose them to injury. When children begin to fall from their bikes or from a skateboard, they instinctively try to slow down the fall by stretching out their arms and hands. This is why the most common broken bone injury with kids is to the wrist or arm bones. When a bone is broken, it may protrude through the skin. This type of injury is called an open break. If the bone does not break through the skin, it is called a closed break. Bones that are broken but not set properly can cause problems later on. Being involved in exercise can cause a bone to break, but it is also one of the best ways to prevent a break. Exercising makes bones stronger so that they can stand more pressure and be less likely to break. This series, titled "First Facts. Health Matters," presents simple, brief explanations about how things that affect the young reader happen. Each title contains a hands-on activity that illustrates the principles discussed in the book or gives additional information. The glossary contains all the words that are in bold print throughout the text. An index and suggestions for further reading are included. This publisher maintains a web site, facthound.com, that directs children to resources chosen for age appropriateness. Each selection of resources is identified by typing in the book ID. Resources selected are then specific to age and the subject of the title. This management of resources is particularly helpful for this age group. All titles in this series have the same resource management page, and all titles are recommended for elementary classrooms and media collections.
