Overview

Lauren Layne’s heart-wrenching novel tells the story of a girl with secrets, a guy with scars, and a love that could save them both . . . or destroy them.

When Olivia Middleton abandons the glamour of Park Avenue for a remote, coastal town in Maine, everyone assumes she’s being the kind do-gooder she’s always been. But Olivia has a secret: helping an injured war veteran reenter society isn’t about charity—it’s about penance. Only, Olivia’s client isn’t the grateful elderly man she’s expecting. Instead, he’s a brooding twenty-four-year-old who has no intention of being Olivia’s path to redemption . . . and whose smoldering gaze and forbidden touch might be her undoing.

Paul Langdon doesn’t need a mirror to show him he’s no longer the hotshot quarterback he was before the war. He knows he’s ugly—inside and out. He’ll do anything to stay in self-imposed exile, even accept his father’s ultimatum that Paul tolerate the newest caretaker for three months or lose his inheritance. But Paul doesn’t count on the beautiful twenty-two-year-old who makes him long for things that he can never have. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more keeping his distance is impossible.

Now Paul and Olivia have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Or are they forever broken?

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
10/10/2014
In this series opener, Olivia Middleton abandons her Park Avenue home and college to head to a small coastal town in Maine for a job. Everyone assumes she is being kindhearted in going off to care for someone, but it is more than that: she is seeking penance. Olivia's client is not the elderly man she expected but instead 24-year-old Paul Langdon, a wounded veteran. Paul has no intention of allowing this new caretaker in until his father issues an ultimatum that he tolerate her for three months or lose his inheritance. What Paul doesn't count on is that Olivia is his age, beautiful, and able to slip past his defenses.
Verdict This fast-paced, plot-driven novel from Layne (Isn't She Lovely) meets the definition of new adult fiction. There is a lot going on among characters at the beginning, leaving readers to wonder if there is a story here. After a couple of chapters, though, it all starts to come together as Olivia and Paul must decide whether they will help each other out. Ultimately, a solid tale and a quick read, with plenty of steamy romance and sex.—Phyllis Goodman, Clermont Cty. P.L., OH

I received a copy in exchange of an honest review.

I loved the book, a story of loss, betrayal, love, healing and hope told in a very compelling, touching and fun manner, a modern version of the beauty and the beast.

Olivia is a privileged young woman from Manhattan's 5th Avenue, who lives a life of contentment without happiness and feeling cornered to make a important life decision, makes a choice that betrays her long time friend/boyfriend Ethan and good friend Michael. Follows dropping out of college and looking for redemption in the form of employment as a caregiver for a war veteran, in a lost little city in Maine.
Paul is a war veteran who is tormented by survivor's guilt, being the unique survivor of his marine patrol, and bearer of disfiguring face scars and an afflicted leg-he' lives as an hermit in one of his father's remote properties in Maine. Getting those two broken souls together would lead to a long journey to healing, love and hope.
Ms Layne is a great story teller, the characters are well defined, realistic, with the right touch of wit and self-deprecation, it makes the reader laugh and brings tears to the eye and makes the book a definite page turner. The journey to trust and healing is not easy, there are field mines on the way, but every step is further in the right direction of redemption and rebirth of the soul.

Another FABULOUS read by Lauren Layne! She does New Adult right! The characters Layne creates are multi-dimensional and very easy to like. Yes, even Paul at his worst. Broody, sexy Paul. Yum… She doesn’t waste any time jumping into the story, either. You get just enough to know what’s going on and BAM! Off you go.

I particularly appreciate how she handles sexual tension between characters. I’ve only read two of her books now, but it’s never felt forced or contrived. The buildup is fantastic and the payoffs are explosive and extremely satisfying. Looking for heat? Right here. In spades.

This was a great followup to “Isn’t She Lovely.” It was fun getting to know Olivia and her side of the story. Is that a hint of “Beauty and the Beast” I detect? ;) I’m a sucker for any kind of re-telling, particularly a fairytale.

I’m officially hooked on Lauren Layne. I suspect I’ll be taking down the rest of her collection over the next few months… Thanks for the great vacay read!

4 - I have a serious lady boner for the guy I'm supposed to work for. Stars!

I was a little nervous when I started Broken, Olivia featured somewhat as the enemy in the first book in this series Isn’t She Lovely and I was interested to see what sort of story Lauren would give her.

We were pathetic privileged monsters, and I, for one, am determined to change, even if his isn’t.

Olivia in the first few pages of the book is someone I really though I wasn’t going to like, but as the story progresses, I fell more and more in love with her. Paul really does treat her pretty abhorrently at points, but rather than give up, pack up and go running back to her wealthy parents and hassle free lifestyle. She stands up and fights for herself, and for Paul.

She makes me long for normal. She has to go.

I loved Paul too, he was an absolute idiot in the beginning of their story, but as Olivia kept bouncing back from his attempts to get rid of her, he gradually opened up more, and you got too see the real guy beneath, and not just the miserable anti-social invalid, he wanted people to believe he was.

There has to be a human being left under the cold savage. I just don’t know how to reach him… yet.

There are a lot of moments in this where I had to stop and take a breath and wipe away a tear, don’t for one second think that this book is light and fluffy because it is being released under the Flirt/Rouge logo. Both Olivia and Paul have issues and secrets they are keeping from each other that they work through as the book progresses, and I struggled to put this book down.

She’s gorgeous and dazzling. I’m disfigured at best, monstrous at worst.

I adored the first book in the Redemption series, and I loved this one too, the ending just made me want to hug the random person sitting next to me on the bus. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for Michael to get his book, I am keen to see where Lauren takes us next.

    ”I’d go anywhere for you.”

Wonderful love story - a must read!

One of the sweetest love stories I've read in a while. Sort of partial since it involved one of our Wounded Warriors. Read the last chapter over about 5 times!!

A Modern Beauty and the Beast

This book is so amazing! It's my favorite kind of story... a guy with major scars (literal and emotional) and the beauty that shows him how to live again. It's got an extra spice to it because the girl isn't so perfect either. I definitely recommend.

Can't believe it took me this long to read it... in all honestly I read this book in 3 days.. I just love how everything came together... every emotion both Paul and Olivia went through you were either happy with what just happened or you couldn't believe what came out of both of their mouth at times.. I love how Lauren told this story and can't wait to read the next one!

A long, long time ago (at least in book time) I read a novella called Isn't She Lovely. It was my first time reading one of Lauren Layne's books. I fell in love with it. Then, for one reason or another, I totally forgot to check in and see when a sequel would be available. It wasn't until I was on NetGalley a month or so ago and saw the second full-length book was available to request that I thought to look further into the series. I hate that I waited so long to do it, but I am so, so glad I read this book.

Olivia was a character I didn't much care for in Isn't She Lovely. The ex girlfriend of the leading man, she just didn't impress me much. She came off as spoiled and shallow and generally unlikable. And she really was. But that's the old Olivia. In this book, she knows she screwed up when it came to Ethan and Michael. She was all about paying her penance, and was doing so by going to Maine for the summer to attend to a wounded war vet. She had no idea what she was getting herself into.

Olivia thought she would be assisting an older, cranky war vet, but what she got instead was Paul. Paul was nearly her age, stunningly attractive (even with the wounds on his face) and incredibly bitter. His dad was ready to write him off entirely. The staff at the house found him difficult. He didn't want Olivia's help. He didn't want anyone's help. He simply wanted to be left alone. The only reason he even agreed to having Olivia there was so that his father would give him the inheritance he needed to help his now deceased friend's family. But, as it so often happens, what he wanted least was what he really needed most.

I don't even know where to start when it comes to my feelings for this book. I loved the depth of the characters. I loved that Olivia was strong enough to push back when Paul tried to get under her skin. I didn't expect that of her, which made it even better. I'm a sucker for a good antagonistic story and these two did it better than any books I've read in recent memory. I loved the pace at which things happened between them. It felt real. It was great to watch them move from barely tolerating each other (and desperately trying to push each others buttons) to friends to something physical and to something more substantial. I enjoyed their banter and their passion. But still, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop because I knew it would. It broke me when it did. Then it put me back together again.

This book was just fantastic. It's one of my favorite new adult reads of the year so far. It was real and honest and all kinds of emotional. I fell in love with the characters and cheered their growth throughout the book. My heart broke for Paul at times as I watched him struggle to accept who he was now and find those small ways to enjoy the things that used to be a huge part of him. I started off the book relatively ambivalent about Olivia, but I was singing her praises when it was all said and done. I loved that she was strong and confident enough to push him, to help him, but also knew when to walk away. Gah! I just loved these two so much. They made me feel everything.

I'm definitely excited for the next book in this series. I'm interested to see what Michael is really all about. If the first two books in this series are any indication, I will fall in love with it.
