Overview

Broken Promises: A Matt Davis Mystery is a 2014 Indie B.R.A.G. medallion honoree.
When the body of Maggie McFarland, an 86-year old widow, is found among the rubble of the once-famous, landmark Artemis Hotel, leveled by fire nearly seventy years ago, residents of Roscoe are shocked. However, it is not the location where Maggie is found, but rather the manner of her demise that has everyone puzzled. For it isn't a heart attack that has felled her; nor has she suffered a stroke, or taken a fatal fall from a porch. Her life has not ended so uneventfully. Maggie has been killed by a bullet to the heart, fired from a pistol at close range. Who would possibly want to kill this kind, gentle woman, known throughout the area as one of the best trout fly tiers within a hundred miles of the famed Beaverkill River? That is the mystery that confronts Matt Davis in Broken Promises, one of the most baffling cases of his career.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon - Bill Farkas
Mr. Perrone has crafted a great story that shows how a murder case really gets solved. As in all the Matt Davis books, the case is not solved overnight by some huge insight; his detective has to fit the pieces together painstakingly, as you would with a really challenging puzzle. It's become somewhat of a trademark of this mystery series that the reader doesn't simply follow the main character, but is allowed to peek into the past events that brought the characters to this point in their lives.
Amazon - Merle Campisi
"Both me and my husband Joe really enjoyed this latest work of author Joe Perrone Jr. The author make you feel like you are a resident of Rosco, N.Y. and the events taking place are going to affect you. The only advice I have for the author is to stay away from the trout stream and get busy on another great mystery. The Police Chief Matt Davis is a down to earth character who does not have all the answers but just keeps digging."
Amazon - Gwyneth Rice
"I very much enjoyed the chapters switching back and forth from 1944 to the present, showing the life of the murder victim when she was a young woman and how she, and the other characters involved, ended up in the present day. This was a real murder and a life mystery entwined with Matt Davis, police chief, balancing the needs and worries of his personal life and the need to solve the murder."
Amazon - Richard Brawer
"Mr. Perrone keeps us turning the pages with fast reading prose and crisp dialogue as he flashes back and forth between 1944 and the present, introducing one suspect at a time and the incident that leads us to the motive for the murder and the murderer. "Broken Promises" is thoroughly enjoyable."

Meet the Author

Joe Perrone Jr. worked as a sportswriter for the Passaic-Clifton, NJ, Herald News, as well as a freelance advertising copywriter. Joe was also a professional fly-fishing guide for ten years in the Catskill Mountains of New York, and has had several fly-fishing short stories published in the Mid Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide.
The author is perhaps best known for his Matt Davis Mystery Series, which includes "As the Twig is Bent," "Opening Day," " Twice Bitten," and now "Broken Promises" (the most recent in the series). All but the first of the Matt Davis Mysteries are actually set in Roscoe, NY, the small Upstate New York fishing village where Joe was a fly-fishing guide on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc Rivers.

Joe's first novel, "Escaping Innocence: A Story of Awakening," was published in 2008, and is an evocative coming-of-age novel set in the turbulent '60s. In addition to his four novels, Joe has authored two non-fiction works, "A 'Real' Man's Guide to Divorce (First, you bend over and...)," published in 2009 and "Gone Fishin' with Kids (How to Take Your Kid Fishing and Still be Friends)," co-authored with Manny Luftglass, and published in 1997.

"As the Twig is Bent" and "Opening Day" are currently available in audio book. Two other Matt Davis Mysteries, "Twice Bitten" and "Broken Promises" will be available in audio books later in 2013, as well as "Escaping Innocence: A Story of Awakening," which is currently being recorded and will become available in September. The audio books will be distributed by ACX.com through Amazon.com, Audible.com, and iTunes.

"Opening Day" was recently awarded an Indie B.R.A.G. Medallion, and in 2011, "As The Twig Is Bent" was translated into Portuguese as "Pau que nasce torto" by Rafa Lombardino of Word Awareness, Inc. of Santee, CA. Plans are underway to translate "Opening Day" into Portuguese in the very near future. All of Joe's books are available in paperback and Ebook formats.

Joe lives in Western North Carolina with his wife, Becky, and the couple's two cats, Callie and Cassie. The author enjoys hearing from his readers, and can be reached with comment and questions via Email at: or by visiting his website at www.joeperronejr.com. This is the fourth Matt Davis mystery that I have read and I think Broken Promises is the best.  I particularly enjoy
the way Mr. Perrone tells the story from several points of view and the way his characters seem so real.  It is obvious
that the author did a lot of research into the time period of the Forties and also into the subject of wind turbines (a sub-
plot that provides just enough interest between the action scenes of the main story itself).  Matt's relationship with his wife, Val, strikes me as
authentic and realistic.  My favorite character is probably Frank Kuttner, the owner of the fly shop, whom Matt visits for
occasional common sense advice.  Keep 'em coming!
