Overview

Charlie Beckham is a rising star among federal prosecutors until, on the morning of the most important court day of his career, a deranged homeless man turns Charlie's life upside down with a single word. He calls Charlie by a secret nickname known by only one other person in the world--Charlie's brother Jake, who went missing thirteen years ago. Could the homeless man have information about Jake's whereabouts after all these years? Is it possible that the long-haired, bearded vagrant actually is Jake? Charlie has a hundred questions but the homeless man disappears before Charlie can ask a single one.

So begins Charlie's search for answers, and for his brother, a search that leads him down Boston's darkest streets, into its blackest alleys, and, finally, into its criminal underworld. But if Charlie wants answers he'll have to get them from some of the most feared and ruthless people in the city.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews (starred review) - Kirkus Reviews
"A prosecutor and a homeless man team up against a murderous conspiracy in this rollicking thriller... The two settle into an entertaining dynamic as ... Hankins surrounds them with a crackerjack cast of bristling thugs, weaselly lowlifes and beady-eyed feds, and he ties the story together with pitch-perfect dialogue, mordant humor and action scenes poised exquisitely between menace and chaos... A complex, entertaining thriller."

I loved this book! Don't let 900+ pages intimidate you. It's so gripping that you'll barely notice the pages flying by. The author gave great charcter descriptions. There was lots of action and suspense. I could hardly put it down, and stayed up till the wee hours reading more than once. I just couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. This book was a real page turner from beginning to end. I look forward to reading more books from this author.

Great book. I had to check and make sure I only spent .99! I've spent much more for a read not half this good. Engaging throughout. 900+ nook pages. I do not do reviews but had to on this one. A great deal on a great read.

This is an extremely well written novel, with a great original plot, that keeps you up all night once you start reading. It is a book about a lawyer who sees his career virtually vanish before his eyes, as his personal problems approach solution, as his legal problems get much bigger, and his only ally is a mentally addled homeless............. Well, you need to read it yourself!

Starts slow but worth pushing though. When I was done I immediately bought his other 2 novels.

Great mystery book and one of the first without romance. Yes, he loved jessica but the author didn't lure you into the book by using sex. When i read a mystery that is what i want to read. If i wanted to read a sexual book i would have bought one. This 900 page book kept me up plenty of nights. Loved the characters and laughed a lot at the "ugly" father. Just enough humor was added. Only thing i didn't care for was so much of using gods name in vain. I am going to read more of this authors books and hope they are as good.

At first I thought 900 pages was way to many, then I started to read, boy did those pages fly. What a great book, highly recommend to all!

906 pgs. I loved everything about this novel from the fantastic plot to all the many characters involved. It was tantilizing and kept me on the edge of my seat. The author built the main character up to the point you could imagine him in your mind and reach out and almist touch him. It will keep you guessing. Very well written. You will not lose interest.

This is a What a great read! I could not put it down. It's not your "same old, same old". Great characters. Great story. It's long and I loved every page. Hated for it to end. Can't wait to read more of James Hankins' books.

This is a long book that doesn't seem long enough. It was an awesome read. I highly recommend anyone reading it if you enjoy mysteries. No sex, nothing too ugly - just a great story.

I didn't like this book. I kept hoping it would get better but I found myself bored and tried of reading the same concept over and over with VERY little development. The author repeatedly reminds the reader of his character's internal conflicts several times as if to remind us of how it ties into the story. Why? I understand! Get on with it! Unnecessary added wording. I can tell the author is trying to engage the reader by describing the scene, giving quirky details that you HOPE will come into play later but he fails at tying it together. Kind of predictable which is exactly the opposite of what I look for in a mystery/crime book. I like my mysteries to have hidden twists and new concepts. Let me ask you something, when you think "the mob" do you sometimes think that they torture people they want info from? Yeah! Me too! Overall this book did not keep my attention, did not progress quickly enough, repeats principal concept too often, I felt minimal connection to the key character, slow progress to the finish.
