Overview

Charlie Beckham is a rising star among federal prosecutors until, on the morning of the most important court day of his career, a deranged homeless man turns Charlie’s life upside down with a single word. He calls Charlie by a secret nickname known by only one other person in the world—Charlie’s brother Jake, who went missing thirteen years ago. Could the homeless man have information about Jake’s whereabouts after all these years? Is it possible that the long-haired, bearded vagrant actually is Jake? Charlie has a hundred questions but the homeless man disappears before Charlie can ask a single one.

So begins Charlie’s search for answers, and for his brother, a search that leads him down Boston's darkest streets, into its blackest alleys, and, finally, into its criminal underworld. But if Charlie wants answers he'll have to get them from some of the most feared and ruthless people in the city.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews (starred review) - Kirkus Reviews
"A prosecutor and a homeless man team up against a murderous conspiracy in this rollicking thriller... The two settle into an entertaining dynamic as ... Hankins surrounds them with a crackerjack cast of bristling thugs, weaselly lowlifes and beady-eyed feds, and he ties the story together with pitch-perfect dialogue, mordant humor and action scenes poised exquisitely between menace and chaos... A complex, entertaining thriller."

    A MUST READ

I loved this book! Don't let 900+ pages intimidate you. It's so gripping that you'll barely notice the pages flying by. The author gave great charcter descriptions. There was lots of action and suspense. I could hardly put it down, and stayed up till the wee hours reading more than once. I just couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. This book was a real page turner from beginning to end. I look forward to reading more books from this author.

    Superb, absolutely superb!

This is an extremely well written novel, with a great original plot, that keeps you up all night once you start reading. It is a book about a lawyer who sees his career virtually vanish before his eyes, as his personal problems approach solution, as his legal problems get much bigger, and his only ally is a mentally addled homeless............. Well, you need to read it yourself!

    OK

I did enjoy the story, but found it too long. Not fast paced, but worth reading if you have the time and patience.

    more from this reviewer

When their parents died, Charlie Beckham¿s older brother, Jake,

When their parents died, Charlie Beckham’s older brother, Jake, fought for custody and devoted himself to making sure Charlie had every opportunity he needed to become a success. Now an up and coming federal prosecutor in the US Attorney’s office, Charlie has achieved that success in his career. He’s engaged to an intelligent woman who coincidentally is his boss’s daughter. Yet he is still haunted by the disappearance of Jake thirteen years ago. When a homeless man calls him a secret nickname only known by Jake, it sends Charlie down the rabbit hole, in search of answers.

The premise is a good one and, given Charlie’s loyalty to Jake, his single-mindedness in trying to find answers, even when his actions are clearly going to cause him trouble, are easy to believe. The character development of the major players in this story seems to go deeper than with a typical thriller, but the more complex characterization didn’t feel like it slowed the story down. It’s a rollercoaster ride as Charlie uncovers a conspiracy that goes well beyond anything he imagined.

This book was interesting in spots, but overall the strain on credulity was just too great, even for the mystery/thriller genre.  Mystery/thrillers are often criticized because one or more of the plot elements seem implausible - implausibility is the RULE rather than the exception here.
