Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This warm, gentle picture book cele brates the unquestioning, uncompli cated love that can exist between child and animal. A small girl tells of the brown cow that lives outside her house, enjoying the trees and sky, chewing on the grass and providing milk and cheese for both her and her cat. The narrator's quiet but precise observations paint a genuinely mov ing picture of easy companionship and heartfelt affection. Likewise, the illus trations--small, framed watercolor washes--will touch readers through their very simplicity and directness. Ages 2-6. (May)

PreS-Gr 1-- Brief declarative sentences describe a day in the life of ``a little brown cow with no spots on her back'' who lives in the backyard of a blonde-haired, cat-owning child. Not much more than ear-twitching, fly-swatting, mooing, eating and drinking, and giving milk (``and butter and cheese,'' says the narrator) happen here, but this succinct slice of life, coupled with the love the child feels for the cow, may be enough to please small listeners. Toddlers who would be best served by this plot may find Le Tord's enchanting delicate watercolor illustrations a bit hard to decipher. Still, the text has a natural rhythm that is hard to discount; beginning readers might find it appealing. --Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn.
