All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
By the mid-'90s, most urban R&B had become rather predictable, working on similar combinations of soul and hip-hop, or relying on vocal theatrics on slow, seductive numbers. With his debut album, Brown Sugar, the 21-year-old D'Angelo crashed down some of those barriers. D'Angelo concentrates on classic versions of soul and R&B, but unlike most of his contemporaries, he doesn't cut and paste older songs with hip-hop beats; instead, he attacks the forms with a hip-hop attitude, breathing new life into traditional forms. Not all of his music works -- there are several songs that sound incomplete, relying more on sound than structure. But when he does have a good song -- like the hit "Brown Sugar," Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'," or the bluesy "Shit, Damn, Motherfucker," among several others -- D'Angelo's wild talents are evident. Brown Sugar might not be consistently brilliant, but it is one of the most exciting debuts of 1995, giving a good sense of how deep D'Angelo's talents run.

CLASSIC BLEND OF FUNK, HIP HOP, JAZZ AND SOUL

This is perfect marriage of Funk, hip hop Soul and some Jazz. I don't like it when Critics put a label on music and call it Neo Soul or something. Because I think it takes away from it good music is just that good music. But everything time I listen this CD it takes me back to the time when music was about the art of seduction wooing your woman and Love. This CD captures that, D'angelo's talent is unbelievably impeccable from producing and writing these songs. I can't say enough good things about his talents. Hopefully Im praying he blesses us the fans with another gem like this. Someday

From the moment this album started spinning in my CD player, the head was bobbing, the hands were drumming, the feet were tapping ang the hips were shaking. This is the funkiest album from the funkiest man on the scene at the moment, bring on some more.

Everything you want and more......D'Angelo's Got It

Imagine yourself emerged in a hot bubble bath with scented candles and incents burning in the background. Your next thought would be what CD can I play to complete this mood? Well look no further D'Angelo is here to save the day. He combines old school Prince and coffee house jazz. He not only writes and produces his songs he also plays instruments on them also. Can you say prodigy? From begining to end this CD will make you want to just relax and chill.
