Description: This book provides a study guide for students taking cell biology/histology courses and serves as an excellent review for medical licensing examinations. The 21 chapters cover topics ranging from cytoplasm and organelles to urinary system in an abbreviated outline format. Clinical correlations and practice questions with explanations are included in each chapter.
Purpose: According to the authors, the goal of the book is to help students prepare for the USMLE Step 1 as well as examinations in both undergraduate and graduate-level cell biology/histology courses.
Audience: The book is written primarily for first and second-year medical students who are learning microscopic anatomy/cell biology and preparing for the USMLE Step 1. It will also be appreciated by graduate students and allied health professionals interested in cytotechnology.
Features: The first four chapters summarize basic concepts in cell biology. The subsequent chapters introduce the major tissue types and review the histology of the major organ systems. Each chapter includes an overview and an interesting list of clinical correlations. The chapters conclude with a multiple choice examination, with explanations and references to relevant sections in the book. A comprehensive examination is included at the end of the book. This updated edition offers online access to numerous full-color illustrations and tables, including new online photomicrographs. Bonus questions and color images are also provided online. The authors are outstanding medical educators and researchers.
Assessment: This review book provides an excellent study guide for histology and cell biology. The illustrations and tables are helpful and informative. The authors emphasize key words and organize key concepts. The clinical considerations are excellent and help advanced students integrate information learned in pathology. One criticism is that the multiple choice questions are not constructed in the USMLE style. Most of these questions simply read: Which of the following is true about (add tissue, cell, or process)? This book will capture the attention of medical students and allied health professionals interested in self-assessment and a formatted approach to board review.
