From The CriticsReviewer: Michele Fornaro, PhD (Midwestern University)
Description: Part of the Board Review series, this is the fifth edition of a concise review of human neuroanatomy. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The primary aim is to provide medical and dental students with the basics of neuroanatomy in the board review series format. The combination of concise text with numerous illustrations, clinical correlations, and review tests with answers and explanations make this an excellent tool for exam preparation.
Audience: Medical and dental students preparing for USMLE step 1 or similar examinations are the intended audience.
Features: In a very concise, effective, and useful way, the book covers the essentials of human neuroanatomy organized by both region and system. It also includes chapters on neurodevelopment, neurohistology, and most of the ascending and descending pathways. Many illustrations and detailed legends guide students through the book. The fifth edition offers more than 600 board-type questions with answers and explanations at the end of each chapter, as well as at the end of the book in the format of a comprehensive exam. The book is complemented by a website that offers more resources in terms of text, images, and an interactive question bank that students can use to create review tests.
Assessment: The concise format makes this perfect as a final review prior to examinations. For that matter, the bank of questions at the website is extremely helpful. Students can use this tool to customize randomly selected review tests and verify their knowledge of neuroanatomy. The good quality figures are labeled and correlated with detailed legends. The three-dimensional representations of the ascending and descending pathways help students visualize the anatomical connection among different structures. This book represents a unique opportunity for all students facing the USMLE step 1 test and other examinations to learn neuroanatomy and basic neuroscience.
