    Must Read

This novel really depicts the type of person Bruce Lee was. When he was a child he had to scrap his way through every day. He soon took up the martial art of Gung Fu. This was a more traditional style of martial arts and founded the basis on what would ultimately make Bruce Lee a legend. Lee moved from China back to America where he studied philosophy. He always furthered his studies of the martial arts. As a result of his pioneer¿s mentality and vast knowledge of hand-to-hand combat, Bruce soon developed his own, more practical style of martial arts called Jeet Kune Do. This was based on effectiveness over tradition. This made his already shaky status with the Asian Gung Fu masters even more so. Now, not only was he teaching the martial arts to the western world but ¿disrespecting it¿ in their eyes by not preserving traditions. Bruce soon decided to pursue being and action star as a career. He struggled in the beginning but later his acting career would take off through movies where he would enlighten the world of his new philosophies on combat. At the height of his career Bruce died at age thirty-two. He left behind his wife Linda and their two children. The cause was relatively unknown. Bruce Lee was a true pioneer in the since that he was willing to express himself no matter what the risks may be. His new philosophy on fighting was ¿ To be like water. Water can flow or drip or creep or Crash¿ be water my friend.¿ This means it is important to be able to adapt to your opponent. This was the emphasis on Lee¿s new revolutionary style. To be willing to burden himself with even more criticism and hard ships than he already had said a lot about his strong character. This novel really displays how this ties into his life. I really liked this about the novel. I feel this way because in my eyes this is the absolute most important aspect of Bruce Lee¿s legacy. Sure he was a very charismatic and electrifying action star that we all love to watch, but there is so much more that made him a great man. Everything seems to tie back into this, which makes for a very solid biography on an American icon. Something I didn¿t like so much was how some things were exadurated to make for more compelling reading. This sort of took away from the cut and dry manner a biography needs to have. It makes for interesting reading when Lee¿s philosophies are analyzed by the author Bruce Thomas but he tends to misconstrue some of them by taking his analysis too far. If you have any kind of a pulse and love to watch Bruce Lee in action then you owe it to yourself to check out this book and learn what he was all about.

In Response to Bruce Lee book fails to hit mark

I've been waiting 7 years to give this reviewer a piece of my mind. Well, not really but anyway... I'd just like to say that I own over a dozen books either about Bruce Lee or in his own words. The other 100 or so books are just recycled material from those to make $. Out of the books about Lee's life, this is the only one that paints an honest, non-biased picture. Books by authors like John Little or even Lee's widow Linda may be 'authorized' but that doesn't mean you'll get the whole truth. They want to protect his legacy and in the case of Linda she was and perhaps still is oblivious to Lee's shortcomings, such as his infidelity. If you've never read a biography of Bruce Lee this is a good place to start.

    Great

This book is a nice all around book for many people. It drifts to different subjects while staying on topic at the same time. This remarkable book tells about the times in Bruce's life that he had to keep his pride in, even though there was less than enough hope in his eyes. It doesnt only tell things about him, but about the martial arts. Like Shoalin arts and other things. It is good.

    Like a virgin

When i picked up this book i knew next to nothing about Bruce Lee and his accomplishments. Of course i have seen some of his movies but i didn't know anything about his background or his personal philosophy. This book successes in both categories because of the amount of source material included and Thomas' approach to writing, its similar to him sitting down and talking instead of writing. This is why it was an easy read. But all of the material is hearsay, that can't be denied, so some of it could be interpeted as bias or slanted. All in all though i would hardly recommend this book to someone, like myself, who knows little of the martial arts and wants someplace to start. It gives long lists of quality movies and books to check out making it almost a refrence guide. Enjoy.
