Overview

Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Bruckner recordings have been controversial, to say the least, with some critics complaining that the conductor's concern over details clouds "the big picture." Certainly, there's plenty of detail to savor in this live performance of the composer's valedictory Ninth Symphony. Dynamics are carefully graded throughout, for example, and great care is taken over orchestral balance so that one can enjoy the splendor of Bruckner's counterpoint without wading through muddy textures. Yet there is a sense of sweep, too. Whatever one thinks of Harnoncourt's previous efforts, here he unfurls the vast canvas of this dramatically volatile music in as close to a single gesture as seems possible. An especially valuable bonus is a realization of the sketches for the incomplete finale. Unlike other conductors who have championed various reconstructions of this alluringly elusive torso, Harnoncourt gives the sketch as is and fills the gaps with spoken commentary (it was recorded as part of a live workshop performance the conductor gave with the Vienna Philharmonic in August 2002). Of course it's frustrating that the coda is missing -- leaving the listener hanging off a cliff, so to speak -- but there is enough solid ground here to send Brucknerians into fits of exploratory ecstasy. Indeed, this recording is essential listening for all those devoted to the Austrian composer's unique art. (Note: The recording is playable on both SACD and conventional CD players and sounds terrific on both.)
