Bruckner: The Complete Symphonies

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
Georg Tintner's landmark recordings of the symphonies of Anton Bruckner have long been respected for their clarity, balance, and objectivity, and since his death he has been recognized as one of the leading authorities in this field. Even though Tintner seemed to choose inconsistently among editions, sometimes favoring original versions while at other times choosing later revisions, he brought to Bruckner's music both the knowledge of performance practices and an open-minded approach to the varying but authentic versions.
The box set Naxos released in 2014 contains recordings Tintner made between 1995 and 1998 with three orchestras, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the nine numbered and two unnumbered symphonies are presented with an alternate 1876 version of the Adagio from the "Symphony No. 3," and the 1878 Finale for the "Symphony No. 4, Romantic." Also included is a bonus CD of Tintner's August 1974 lecture given to the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, which was focused on analyzing the Adagio from Bruckner's "Symphony No. 7." This box set is highly recommended to serious Bruckner fans, though first time listeners should sample it first.
