Alice Duncan has a fresh and unique voice! You can't help but love Daisy Gumm Majesty and all of the shenanigans she gets into. Ms. Duncan's writing is rich in detail and does a great job of bringing the post WWI Era to life. Mrs. Majesty is a flawed, lovely, intriguing woman who makes her living as a fake psychic. Her family is just that -a family who love and care about each other though they have all experienced profound loss at the hands of the Kaiser. Especially Daisy whose husband was exposed to mustard gas - making her vibrant high school sweetheart an invalid living in excruciating pain, taking morphine in increasing doses. Add some interesting twists - such as Daisy's best friend, Harold, who happens to be gay and living a gay lifestyle in secret even though illegal at the time. And the dichotomy of societal rules as they are applied to the affluent versus how they are applied to the low and middle class. And the whole thing is tied up with a bow of humour. Bottom line: the Daisy Gumm Majesty series will make you chuckle, tear, laugh, wince, and look forward to the next installment. And I seem to always have a smile on my face at the end of the book.

The more I read about Daisy, her family, her friends and her clients, the more I love them. I want to go to the Pasedena of the 20s and hang out with them, helping Daisy with her spiritualist chores and solving murders, eating Aunt Vi's amazing food and wearing stunning outfits of the era, perfectly designed and tailored by Mrs. Majesty herself. Daisy is so endearing and real - even in the midst of disaster. Alice Duncan continues to use Daisy's circumstances and experiences to gently remind the reader of what is good, what is right and what is real humanity and integrity, incorporating questions with which society still struggles into each story and providing simple answers that force you to wonder why everyone doesn't get it. Like most great lessons, they are taught with subtlety, seamlessly part if the story and never preachy. This adventure explores domestic abuse, human trafficking and class differences, never missing a beat as Daisy struggles with her own moral dilemmas and prejudices. As always, humor abounds and the we learn more about the folks in Daisy's world, with interesting historic tidbits about food, laws, social customs and geography - not to mention dachshunds. Ms. Duncan is especially adept at providing excellent endings, not always happy, but with justice served. This book is particularly satisfying, as Daisy finally resolves some ongoing issues introduced earlier in the series. I did not read the preview for book 11, because it is frustrating to wait for the whole story.

Alice Duncan has created a delightful series with Daisy Majesty. The characters are eccentric and fun, the plots twists and turns keep you thinking. I hope there will be many more books to this series.
