Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"[G]lorious....The crisp, clean lines make this a visual treat even for the very young..." The Horn Book Magazine

With so many alphabet books crowding bookstore shelves, what makes this 1960 reissue a standout? It's as simple as, well, ABC — specifically, ABC's made kid-friendly by chunky black letters and clean-lined watercolors. Note the whimsical touches by Munari, a renowned graphic designer: A 'Vertical Violet Violin' spotlights the letter V, while a pesky fly buzzes from page to page until the book's conclusion, when it becomes 'a fly going Zzzz.' -Child Magazine

Publishers Weekly
In Bruno Munari's ABC (1960), bold illustrations in saturated colors by an acclaimed artist and graphic designer depict an assortment of objects from A to Z, with playful details such as a fly who shows up on various pages from F, "a Fly," to Z, "a fly going Zzzz...." Children's Literature
The fact that this books' creator is an internationally renowned artist and that the book has been reissued do not change the fact that it is still only one among hundreds of cleverly produced ABC books for young children and is not particularly outstanding. There is really nothing more than the artist name and fame to make this book stand out from the rest and that only works if you are familiar with the Munari name. This book, while it has it fun moments and certainly has its place, seems more like it is targeted towards adult fans of Munari's. ABC is graphically bold and brightly colored. It also could be very useful in elementary art classes for studying the artist's work and for graphic design lessons. 2003 (orig. 1960), Chronicle Books, Ages 3 to 5.
