Does not meet expectations. Brush with Desire was not or did not meet the expectation that I had set in my mind from reading the blurb. I just could not connect with Machiko Barrett or the scandal that touched her life. I found it a bit difficult to relate in a way that would make the story come to life for me. I was hoping for a connection with Cassidy's work because I own a few other books given to me by friends (not as recommendations). Thanks, NetGalley.
This is a touching romance about Machiko a former celebrated painter who had a tragedy that made her not want to paint again. She eventually becomes a Nanny for a well off family. Caleb is a very nice and sexy young bachelor who enjoys his beach front home. When Machiko comes to stay in the families beach home she meets Caleb but immediately rejects him. Caleb is persistent and determined to win her love. I found Machiko to be a very dark character who was just rude to Caleb, for some reason that never really became clear. She is going through some type of personal drama from the tragedy that happened while she was painting. The whole background story of her character was muddy and very unclear. We don't know what happened to make her stop painting, and why she is so bitter. I wasn't sure if she was suicidal at one point where she walked into the ocean and almost drowned but she could swim well. Toward the middle of the book I began to feel sorry for Caleb whom she constantly ignores, then seems to get closer only to go back to being distant and sometimes rude. I'm not sure that this was one of my favorite love stories because there was very little "love" in the book. The characters spend a lot of time dancing around their attraction until you aren't sure whether they are getting any benefit out of their relationship. I think that Machiko was a bit too introspective / self centered. She was selfish and at various times she seemed mentally unstable. I'm not sure why Caleb doesn't run in the opposite direction because I surely would. Love does triumph in the end. But, I received an advanced Review copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
